Car clear film protection
« on: May 26, 2014, 11:08:27 AM »
Don't know how many of you know about this.....I only found out by accident and it doesn't appear to be widely known.

I have recently bought a new car and found out that there is clear film you can get put onto cars to protect the paint work. The main manufacturer appears to be 3M (who also own VentureShield).

The product is a clear 'wrap' that can be put onto cars (bonnet, doors, door edges, front bumpers etc) and provides a strong protection against scratches etc.

One of the uses apparently becoming popular, is for 4wd's to protect aganist 'pin striping' down the sides when you go bush. The product doesn't yellow etc, is almost invisible, and you can just pull it off when you sell the car. They make car component templates which you can either buy or have someone apply for you.

Thought I'd let everyone know about it as I hadn't heard about it before.

I do supply and sell this product as i am the Aftermarket manager. Its like clear contact adhesive and is UV resistant.
The only downside is that your paint will fade quicker than the protected part under the 3M adhesive.
Most people only get door edges and boot lip and bonnet done to protect against small hits and chips and bags dragged in and out of the boot.
This would not be recommended as a full body wrap, but instead used in small areas.

My boss received his new Lotus Exige a few months ago and the whole vehicle was immediately covered in the 3M film. He said it took about a day and a half to get it all done.

I know around 6 years ago Vic Widman was using it on his Great Divide Tour vehicle.

Vic had his new truck wrapped just the other week, in Great Divide graphics. Not sure if the clear is basically the same stuff as these advertising wraps.

Apparently, this stuff has been known to take the paint with it if there are any flaws, repaints etc in the paint job.  It also takes decals with it when removed.  Suspect these aren't common problems, but something to look into, regardless.

Mmmm...

Pay to get truck wrapped, and then have it remove some paint & decals when removing it after it gets scratched, then need to get it resprayed

or

Wait till paint is stuffed and just get it resprayed....

Like the idea if just doing the edges through...

My parents have it on the front of their hearses and pickup vehicles. They swear by it.
