Importing from the USA (a mower)

Looking at the options of importing a mower (john deere or husqvarna). Just wondering if anyone has any experience in respect to this?
Massive price difference here in australia.

No experience at all but my cautious nature suggests to me that savings would want to be HUGE to make it worth the hassle.

Imagine a problem encountered post purchase that is of a return to vendor type!  :'(

From what can establish from places that import as part of a business savings tend to be in the 1k-1.5k mark. Definetly on my radar.

I think a few on here have done this previously with chainsaws. Husqvarna saws can be landed for just over half Australian price from TreeStuff.

It all gets down to what you think not having a local warranty is worth. Dealers will be able to pick the US sale  origin from engine numbers.

For that kind of saving id be thinking about it too!

Having recently left the Customs Imports world PLEASE PLEASE check with the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service in your state before laying out any cash - You may require an Import permit , cleanliness certificates etc etc .. Agricultural machinery is high on AQIS list for inspections on arrival etc etc ... Mandrake
Oh and if its second hand its even worse !!

Bright back a few from the states when I was in Defence. We had our own C130 Hercules so space wasn't a problem. I still have my petrol chainsaw, blower vac and push mower all from the states. The import tax was very minimal. There are massive savings on purchase price, freight could be a killer.

Depending on just how fast you need to have the unit on the grass try EvilBay . l was chasing a Cud Cadet 42in cut 19/23hp Hydro static drive . Roll it out the door in Vic somewhere around $3800/4500 depending on where it came from
Started bidding on a unit won the auction $2850 brand new ready for work . Then it was a trip to Geelong to collect it a nice 6hour return trip . New mower all the papers , no drama . Somebody else has landed it & done the hard bits . l service it & any parts required are only a quick call away to my local Cub dealer . ln most cases are willing to point you I the right direction if you dont understand what needs to be done . Local money kept in Australia  :cup: :cheers:

If the product is 100% made in usa, and you can document it, you shouldnt pay import duties but if is over $900 you will pay gst
Have ro pay pretty big fees to forwarder but still can be much cheaper
Often sellers in the us will recieve letter from head office after australian distributors complain. It os fair enough as Aus has strict consumer laws and as the impoter they are bound by them
By importing yourself you have no warranty and return law protection

Having a converstation with my father who has sold Cox ride on mowers for 40 odd years and still is a fan. I said the if I won lotto what mower would I buy to see me out. Thinking myself of a John Deere, he said buy a Walker!
Believe they are imported to Australia
Not sure if this helps but my 2 cents on choice i guess

I know very little about lots of things and i'm an expert on nothing, but here goes on what I nose.

I very nearly bought a grey import Husky a few years back. Brand new, with a warranty from Brisbane Valley Traders (B.V.T) in Esk.
He's a nice enough bloke, from what I could make out and he informed me the warranty is run like a second hand car dealer, where it is often done through a broker type of set-up.

You can't take them to a Husky dealer, as they will laugh at you and throw rocks at you until you leave. Spare parts aren't always interchangeable, so delays may occur waiting to sort any issues.... if you have any.

I ended up using brand new stuff from local dealers, as it puts the money back into here.

Having said that, I did buy a Chonda (Chinese Honda)powered fire fighters pump from B.V.T. and some bits for our place out that way and they have been fine.

One issue I had with the pump was sorted on the spot, so the service from B.V.T is ok.

My 2 bobs worth and I have no overlap with B.V.T.

Enough is Enough  buy local  , keep locals in a job  , get your spares local  , keep the $ local . Then you can deal with a Local bloke locally     .                           :cup: :cheers:

Problem getting it in the states is that their motors don't last very long. In saying that, you can always replace it. Unless the motor/ engine is made somewhere reputable. Still considering in buying my Husky saw from across the pacific. I bought a Stihl recently and it is made in Germany. The mower guy said he can sell me a yank one or a Chinese one but you get what you pay for.cheers

Don't forget to factor in local US tax's as well. Can vary for 0 in Oregon to 12.5% in some states. It is certainly feasible but for what I have seen more for the people that choose to do a few. Ie get a 20ft shipping container and fill it with mowers and saws. Then you pay one off import costs and GST on total manifest.  Shouldn't be any issues with brand new equipment and quarantine providing it was signed off over there and certificates issued if anything is in wood.

I have been toying with the idea of bringing in a UTV (Polaris or Can-am) from th US.
Some major $$ can be saved on paper and it all almost seems to good to be true.

I had a mate bring in a Harley a couple of years ago and it all worked out well for him. He got a $38000 bike landed in oz for $17000.

The warranty side of things doesn't worry me so much it's the completely getting shafted without a leg to stand on that worries me ???

sounds good and something i try and do, IF the actual product is built in australia, by australians.

How did your mate go getting it registered.   I've heard this story before but what you didn't hear in those days (might be different now) is that you need an Australian compliance plate before you can get it registered.   Back then in Vic Peter Stevens were the only ones authorised to issue one.   Guess how much you paid for one?

No worries at all getting it registered.

He had to change the brake lines to braided ones and had to change the way/ position the rego plate is held on.

Didn't even have to put the original pipes back on, it had V & H pipes that come with it as well.

It had done 1200 mile when my mate purchased it with all the fruit on it. He and one of his mates headed over to the US purchased the bikes, rode across the country for 5 weeks put it in a container and it arrived in Oz 3 weeks later.

They used a crowd in Adelaide to organize the shipping, $1300 it cost to get it out here.
Also had to pay Aussie GST when it hit Melbourne.
Was just over 17g landed. The exchange rate helped a bit .
