What spares are you taking?

I've been looking at what spares I'm going to take with me.

A bearing kit for the trailer and Patrol
spare studs for the camper (passed a Cub on the Birdsville track that had sheared all of the studs)
spare cotter pins

Always have wire and solder in.

a set of hoses and belts for the Patrol

what's everyone else taking

I actually lost the retaining pin on my Tregg style hitch crossing the Simpson. I can't remember if it was a R clip or a lynch pin as I use both. Was doing a walk around after a lunch stop and bingo the T pin was there but no retaining pin. Lucky I carry a spare T pin and clip.

Look at U bolts for the leaf spring/axle assembly. If you have spare wheel studs make sure you have nuts as well.

Reading this thread stresses me. I'm not in the slightest bit mechanically minded and haven't given 'spares' the slightest thought or budgeted for.

We've a very young tug and camper (NT Exceed Pajero and Trackabout CT) and hoping we won't need roadside repairs. I guess, should the need arise we've got roadside assistance (top level) and time on our hands should we need to split from the group.

Hmm, thinking I should pack something... But what?

Mate, apart from maybe an extra tyre carcass you probably don't need to bother much. Nowhere on this trip is really remote, and you'll always have company, so just ensure you get a thorough service before you go, make sure you have top cover and enjoy.

A couple spares worth considering.

the Spare car key - in case of being lost, locked in the car or the 3yo uses it in the sandpit
Spare set of prescription glasses - a few years ago, we just left town and the wife puts glasses on and they snapped in two pieces

Good point John, but it's good to have a few things for "just in cases" and peace of mind. I'll be taking:
1L oil (for top ups if needed)
coolant
brake fluid
assorted fuses
air filter
bearings for the camper
tool kit with bits and pieces

Hope not to need any of it, but it's there if I do (or if anyone else needs it)!

Oils and coolant maybe. Plugs and leads? No way, for a Paj. Major job to change them. Just make sure they are changed when due every 100,000ks.

My cruiser chews through the oil so I'll need to carry 5Lt, maybe fan belts etc. I'm sure there will be more I think of later

I would suggest anybody with a diesel engine takes a spare fuel filter.  Fuel supply may be dodgy in remote locations.

Maybe someone needs to throw in a 1 metre length of gal pipe. Very handy for undoing wheel nuts that have been done up too tight. (Or a battery driven rattle gun). Some 8 gauge fencing wire comes in handy for a lot of things too. (spare fuse anyone    )

Ohh OK my bad now i get you sorry when you said service i thought you meant like all the parts for a 10,000 or whatever K service my point is just go to Alice

Yep I've lost the retaining pin for the treg hitch in the flinders. Lost a bearing cap on the trailer after we took it off at the start of the birdsville track to nip up the bearings had to rely on a half coke can and gaffer tape.

Assorted cable ties, gaffer and duct tape and a couple of the little cheap tarps from super cheap are always good to have.

If you are carrying bearing kits. Pre grease them at home & pack them in original packing. Will last for ages like that. I carry radiator hoses full set. Wheel studs two front two rear. Epoxy to seal fuel tank leaks. Fan belts.front and rear axle oil seals. Hub flange gaskets. Plenty of fuses. Some wire to fix things. Spare used disc brake pads. Oil filter, fuel filter. 5 Ltrs of engine oil.   These are normally left in the car.

Should I throw in a welding mask. 

We have the normal spare belts, hoses, thermostat, radiator cap. filters etc without going overboard.
Have just had the coolant, hoses, belts replaced. Wheel bearings front and back have all been replaced along with CV's, front uni's (genuine), trailing arm bushes and rear diff has been overhauled etc etc. The poor old cruiser is nearly brand new underneath.

Just fitted a Donaldson Top Spin air pre-filter to use on the dust. The snorkel ram is best for normal speeds but when we hit the dust I'll whack the pre-filter on.
We just need to do the last minute, oil and filter change plus I'll replace the air and both fuel filters the weekend before we head off.
Cant wait.
