Event Data Recorders
« on: May 02, 2014, 05:59:22 PM »
The missing Malaysian plane and the search for its black box has been in the news for weeks now.  But did you know your vehicle has its own black box?  I didn't until I read a thread an another forum today.  I have edited the post on the other forum below.

If your vehicle is post 1997 AND the manufacturer exports your model into the USA then it's highly likely you have one in your vehicle.

And if you have a fatal or major prang that little box could either help prove your guilt or your innocence.

It might tell them just what you were up to in the last few seconds prior to that prang, just how fast you were driving, were you actually braking, maybe how hard, maybe which way you were pointing the steering wheel and a whole heap of other data about your driving.

Video goes for 53 minutes but I watched it to the end and found it very informative.

Hi,
I believe the OBDC (OnBoard Diagnostic Computer) plug on most modern cars can accept a bluetooth dongle that will talk in real time to an App on a Smart Phone and give you all sorts of interesting data on the engine performance.

All a bit techie for me.

cheers

Yes, but it is mainly used for diagnostics.  Very different to what an EDR can collect

If it was made mandatory to have it installed in your vehicle, would it really help the investigators?

Considering the facts vs calculations vs technology!

I use Torque on my android with a blue tooth dongle and its amazing the data it captures, g force, speed, location and a whole heap more.

I watched a doco on mh370 the other nite and they were saying that as soon as Inmarsat get their new satellites up they will be live streaming all aircraft data directly back to a base station and the black box as it is now will be obsolete

Live Streaming can be fiddled with.
The Black box should be  retained as primary record, with Live streaming as assistance when called upon.

Don't think they were implying that they were going to get rid of them just update them I think, I ain't that smart to really know what's going on

I may be wrong, ( and I often am ) but I do not think that the police as yet can use/charge you with the information stored on the OBDC.

Lots mate.  Doesn't have to be called the same name but most of the vehicles imported into Aus are also exported to USA.  Might have a different grill but the same underneath.
