HELP......1998 Rav4 New Key Transponder, Programing the ECU
« on: April 25, 2014, 05:59:46 PM »
Maybe one of you Toyota bright sparks can help us
The lad bought a used (very used 340K) 1998 Rav4 for his first car, but we only got one key.
So before it gets lost we are trying to procure another one.
With some research we have bought and got cut a suitable key blank so at least we have a key that mechanically operates all the locks and the ignition.
The Rav4 apparently uses a Texas T4 transponder chip (ID4C) which we have also purchased a new one (about 10mm long 4mm wide) and glued it into the new key head.
Apparently we should be able to tell the ECU to accept this transponder code. There are various instructions on you tube and the net telling you to press the brake and accelerator pedals in sequences and in so many seconds and swapping the old and new key into the ignition and dash lights confirm the programing, but they are not for the 1998 and seem to start that at 2000 - 2006. Anyway it doesn't work, doesn't seem to do anything at all. :'(
As the lad does not have $200 to give to Mr Minute to buy a key and them to clone the original transponder we've given this a go, so far it's only cost him $5 for the transponder chip, $13 for the key blank in a flick out type key head and $35 to get it cut.

Hopefully someone here might be able to tell us how to program the ECU to accept the new chip.

Mark

Thanks Evo, we've seen this one as well, unfortunately it's for the Fob which disables the alarm as far as I can tell, that must be a higher model then what we have as there's no alarm or fob, we don't seem to have that box, the original key is pretty standard looking, while this one has central locking you still have to stick the key in a door to unlock it.
However we appreciate your response

Please keep the ideas coming............we will try everything

This is a pic of the original key.

Fair enough, are you sure you don't have that module under there? The only reason is the immobiliser is apart of the security system. Its either going to be running through there or the bcm (body control manual) for what its worth most places will program the key for you. I had one programmed for the navara for $30. Mr minute aren't the only place that will do it. Most places who cut keys have the facility to do it.

You may find it is not working as you appear to have a 'valet' key rather than a 'master' key. Both the Prado and the missus' Corolla have a similar looking key that opens the doors manually and starts the car. We also have 2 remote keys that are the master keys you need to programme other keys from.

Not sure if this is helpful.
We just sold our 98 Rav and the transponder / remote was a separate 'fob', not part of the key......

Yeah we were wondering (worrying about) the same thing.
We only have one key and it doesn't have a remote with it. The net says the master key has a black head, but this one has a really dark grey head that could be black :-[
The one we have doesn't open the glove box actually is nothing like even going into the glove box lock, isn't the valet key not supposed to open the glove box?
Maybe we only have a valet key...................

Sorry to say you have a valet key. You need Toyota to recode a new master key and immobiliser $$$. I guess you don't have the metal tag with the key code on it either?

The other issue is if you ever lose/break that key you will never be able to start the car again without a full recode.

I think you need your local Locksmith to have a look at it.

They'll have replacement keys.  Be cheaper than mr. Toyota too.
Just in the head of the key, beside where the shaft of the key enters the plastic, will be the RFID chip.  The Locksmith should be able to program that for you.
He'll also have a list of instructions for programming the fob in your vehicle too.
You look like you have an RFID chip already, by the picture.

The Master key is needed.  (The valet key will not open the glove-box or boot.)

On Mine, ok.
The alarm fob for my 2000 Cruiser was separate to the Key.
The key for mine looks very similar to the one in your picture.
Only Black, with a grooved shaft, not edge cut.
The Fob controls the Central locking and the Alarm on mine, just like a lot of other Toyota models.
There is also a Black box in the engine-bay with a speaker in the side of it, as well as a circular type pin lock in another face of the box.  Needs one of the tube keys with the grooves around it to change its settings.   (It depends on this box for which Key or Fob you need. You may have something different.)  Toyota had more than one type of Alarm/Disabling system through the various models/years.

To program the alarm function and operate the power door locks on my 2000 Cruiser.
It was use a Master key in the ignition.
And then, without starting the vehicle, you turned the key back and fwd. a set number of times.  (20 I think)
Then the indicators flashed and you had a short time to press buttons on the remotes.
Maximum of 3, including the original.
Each time you press a remote button the indicators flash.
So you have to press them separately, one after another, not all at once.
I'd wonder how many other keys and remotes are laying around out there, capable of opening the vehicle.
When you only have the one key.

Taking it to a Locksmith, not Mr. Minute, would save all the pain.

Hope that helps.
