I am on Straddie enjoying a great few days on the beach. We woul be camped no more than 100 metres, mostly grass, from council supplied drop toilets.

Yet, many of the people around me have set up their own hole in ground toilets.

Is this wrong or am i looking at it wrong?

I thought the idea of council drop toilets was so you could camp reasonably safely without uncovering nasties....

Is there any unwritten (or written) rule about this ?

Not that I am aware of.  As long as the hole is deep enough I don't see a major issue.  When nature calls and its 2am and its pi#$ing rain I know I would rather NOT walk/run 100m in the dark!!!

I think you are right.  Society is now about themselves not others.  I mentioned this to one of our environmental officers and she just about gagged. Way to spread germs that will wreck a vacation.

Though I saw on another forum a bloke got caught tipping his cassette of &*& over the back fence of a place while on holidays.
My alternative to cheap import trailers;

As said there is no written rule, in fact thats why National Parks frown upon spears being sunk into the sand for fresh water on Moreton and Fraser these days. As long as they dig a deep enough hole there isnt usually a problem BUT most dont.
Enjoy Straddie

Crappy situation...
I thought they had to be 30/50? metres from a water source?
To avoid run off/ polluting waterways?
With min 3ft hole?
But that may be a courtesy not a rule?
Always give 100%... Unless you are giving blood.. then it may not go so well...

Minimum of 20 feets deep, and around 1 foot in diameter.. you know, for really big teeurds
I DON'T CARE HOW NICE THE HAND SOAP SMELLS.....

You should never walk out of the public toilets sniffing your fingers.

Mate 3/4 of a long handled shovel is a good start. Just be curtious on placement away from your camp and everyone elses.

I'd say we're pretty close to even stevens wouldn't you? ;D ;D
Although I have learned in life that the more mud you sling the dirtier you get, and the closer you are to return fire.
Aah, well, that's life and the weekend shot. Be good JC, one day we really will have to sit on opposite sides of a air hockey table and battle it out (or just get drunk at a bar!!)

A very smelly topic, but IMHO, a very timely one. Sadly, I have witnessed myself the foolish habits of some campers in this regard.
As an ex military person, where I gained my knowledge of the finer arts of long drops, I'm always disgusted at what I see being done at camp sites. We go to the great outdoors to enjoy what it has to offer, yet some idiot has cat scratched the surface, dropped their load, scratched it over and took off. Only to have someone like us turn up and set our camper right over the cat scratch without knowing until you STEP in the mess. Or dunny paper all over the place and human Shit behind every bush.
Getting back to your subject. I've discovered the reason what Folks do as you've posted.
Apparently they do not wish to use the dirty smelly dunny's the Parks have provided, thus they insist on using their own, most times very questionable set ups.
Of course the FACT that the dunnys is dirty and smells in the first place is because people are too stupid to close the lid after use, also their kids usually make one hell of a mess in such toilets, parents reckon "it's not our so why should I care".
AND, of course in some parks the employees are a little lax in cleaning them regularly, so it all adds up.

I would NEVER, dig a hole anywhere near a established toilet, or in a park anywhere. NOT ON. Even if it means carrying wipes and air freshener to clean the dunny and spray around a bit before use.
IF you MUST dig a hole, PLEASE dig it deep, at least three to four feet, more if possible, and YES, the foul ground sign should be obligatory.

One time it took me 6 days to dig a hole five foot deep. It was bloody hard clay, and the shovel simply bounced off without any effect. So I chucked in a bucket of water every day, allowed it to soak in over night, went back next day and dug it out until it again became too hard, chucked in another bucket of water and repeated the process. After 6 days it got to an acceptable depth never to be a bother to anyone, and allow me to return to same site again and enjoy.

In Victorian parks and forests, they must be a minimum 100m from water courses.

It may not be popular with die hards but I am a massive fan of portable toilets - as a person who will probably spend Tuesday cleaning up from campers who consider poo tickets laying around a good weekend. There are too many people camping to allow it to be sustainable.

I was admiring a beautiful riverside campsite on Thursday while waiting for a helicopter when I stepped in human sh1t. Great and not the first time.

I am right there with you, I am working all of Easter and the attitude of a minority of campers is unbelievable ???, They can bring all their gear with them and then dump anything they break or packaging it came in, which we have to pay to dump :-[ then bitch that it cost too much to camp ???, and rip out plants to make a clearing to cap in instead of walking 100 meters >:(, and not even bury it or cover it up, and have the gaul to say our dunnies are not clean, I am obviously missing something here
Happy Easter Swagger's I know you are not among the sorts I describe above :cup:

Worked today, mostly families and all good. a couple of bogan p platers who thought that doing skids on the gravel was great until they speared of the road in to the bushes. When they asked me to help, I told them I was by calling the cops. Apparently I have a bad attitude ;D

Working tomorrow, and Monday. Then next weekend as well.

  • Trailers, trailers, trailers, trailers..
rule is if you can smell the toilet you are too close to it. They are a keep out, and keep well away from them building that are popping up everywhere.

If one has to go visit one, then I suggest to wear a dust mask.

It would be interesting to have a poll and see how many Swaggers carry a porta loo on their CT.
