So I am currently sell a car on carsales. Now I have read the treads about scams on gumtree but I had not seen any on car sales as of yet.
So today I got a text from a +44 area code (UK) saying about the car with a please reply via an email address. So I replied to the email and questioned the UK area code below is the response I got.

"Hi there,

  Thanks for the reply,  the first time I saw this type of vehicle was
when I went on a trip to QLD and I am interested in buying this
vehicle from you, I am offshore at the moment as I am in Philippines
with Red Cross for the Typhoon relief project. in this case I will be
buying the vehicle in good faith without prior inspection, for this
reason I would like you to give me more details about the condition,
How long have you had it ? And are you driving it presently?

I will buy the item at your asking price and then the vehicle will be
transported by a shipping company that I have used to ship my cars in
the past. I am proposing to pay you through my PayPal account as I am
able to send payment to your PayPal account directly right now amd
also pay 2.4% paypal transfer fees, If you have a paypal account I
would like you to send the me details so that I can make the transfer,
but if you don't have an account you can sign up at www.paypal.com and
get back to me with the email address you used to register.

I will be waiting for your email soonest.

I will also add a tip of $500 for you for helping me out with the
shipping process.

To me that seem a little to close to all of those gumtree scams.

There must be a lot of people working for the Red Cross as I received a very similar email 4 years ago when I sold my previous 4WD and again 2 months ago when selling some trestles.

All these types of responses are obviously scams based on the threads of different forums.

But i'm a bit confused. If the money gets deposited into your account, how can this backfire on you? Or is it the transfer never happens, hence holds up your sale process? Or once you receive the money, 'hand the car over', do they then start the process to argue the transaction?

I have put a couple of cars on carsales, not gumtree, and haven't been contact by someone offshore so i don't know what my actual reaction would be.
Has anyone actually taken a scammer as far as possible?

The scam is that he will be asked to pay the so called shipping company fee to such and such account while the money is on the way into his Pay Pal account.  Suckers will pay the shipping fee, no money will arrive in the Pay Pal account.

Just sold the Prado on Carsales today.  I opted for the Privacy feature, where your number does not get displayed....   Prado sold, no Emails.... happy with the few dollars extra.

Same thing happened to me yesterday - got the text message from the UK phone number, sent email reply saying I wasn't shipping to the UK, then got this email back:


Hi there,

I got this one when looking for a 100 series cruiser. The vehicle was located in Tamworth & upon enquiry the guy said via email, that he was Aussie military & moving to Darwin prior to deployment overseas. We arranged to see the vehicle in Tamworth in two days. He then says a day later I am now in Darwin & gave me a web site & link to look at the car online. I would need to pay a $200 fee for him to hold the car for me.
When I told him I was an airline flight attendant & would be in Darwin the following week to inspect the vehicle, there was no further response.
Scam.
