I might buy a jeep
« on: March 26, 2014, 05:49:32 PM »
I have the opportunity to buy a 1998 jeep Cherokee l Laredo pretty cheap. ( ie $2500 ) 220 klm leathers, quadratrac.  Etc. Is there anything I need to look at(other than my sanity). It will predominantly used as tow rig for the horse float but I can envisage trips with the camper and the dogs.  ?

Electrics, Service History and Airconditioning.
Pay alot of attention to service history as with those km's, it's more than likely that something needs fixing and that could be why they're selling it.

You'll get more detail on www.ausjeepofroad.com forum.

BTW, it's not navy blue and belongs to a guy in Montmorency?

Thanks scarps. It is blue but local to me.  One owner (85 yr old) who drove it every day except Sunday :).  It has a reco trans , cold air and lots of electrics! ! I can handle most things but don't want to half way to Rubicon and got no spark

Cool, if you know the car and it's only going to cost you $2.5k, then go for it I say.  Sounds like a good deal.

Assume it's either the 6cyl or more likely the V8 petrol.  You will find they're a tad thirsty.

It's the 6 cylinder quadratrac.  What specifically should I look for in the electrical department?

See if the mechanic who's been looking after it has a engine computer scan device. More than likely he has if He's been servicing it.  My local guy bought one when He was servicing my last Jeep.
He should be able to give you a printout of error codes history if they haven't been cleared.  There may not be much there, but it will give you an idea.  Once you know the codes, you can search the meaning of each through the Ausjeepoffroad forum.

The main thing I'd be looking for is sensor and computer error codes.  These are not isolated to Jeeps, but many new cars.  It's just with Jeeps they tend to be a bit more temperamental and shut things down when you least expect them.

Once you get an idea of how these beasts behave, you'll know what I mean or what your looking for.

In the main, the older Jeeps were either really good or really bad.  I'm tipping given that the current owner has had it since new?? He's looked after and serviced it, rebuilt the transmission etc so it should be one of the really good ones.

I would never touch one from a second hand car yard even of they gave it to you, but to all accounts it sounds like you could be on a winner with this one.

The guy I know from Montmorency bought one from a car yard. Looked great well maintained etc and has had nothing but trouble with it.  Just wanted to make sure it wasn't this one.

First thought are fire extinguishers >:D. And check the trans oil cooler if you are using it primarily as a tug.
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

I would look at replacing the security system unless you don't plan on anything away from town. Our daughter had a 96 GC auto 6 cylinder out at Roma, but a faulty remote means taking the truck to a Jeep dealer who will charge around $500 for a new remote and programming, which added to a tilt bed transfer over 400 hundreds kilometres is bloody expensive.
When you use the remote to enter the vehicle you have about 30 seconds to get it started or it will only run for two seconds.
Other than a dead radiator and small oil leaks from the trans cooler and rocker gasket, it made a good horse puller.
We heard about bsd fuel economy but it was better than a 3500cc Jackeroo , had more comfort and mord power.
The old Jeeps seem to have a bad name from people who don't know crap, but I woul have another at that price.
The daughters had 240000 k's on it and she had put 40000 in her ownership.
Cheers
Ian

I have taken all your good advice and decided against the jeep. (he sold it to another guy for $1500 before I could make up my mind) So while I was in deranged mode I bought a 97 disco.
let the abuse begin :)

WHAT you Didn't Buy A Jeep:-)
Probably not a bad outcome on the one you were looking at. $1,500 sounds about right, plus $10k now to keep it running. It's a Jeep Addiction:-)
