Who does Roadside Assist?
« on: March 13, 2014, 04:39:47 PM »
G'day everybody,

I've done a search, but couldn't really find a straight answer.  We are about to go on the road for a month.  What I want is some sort of roadside assist if needed.  We will be traveling though country NSW and Victoria.   I'm all good for general insurance, but if we have a unnecessary breakdown, I'd like to be able to get my family and our car to safety?  We are fully insured through Shannon's, and they don't do this sort of thing from what I'm told.
Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Chriso

Yep! RACQ here also. Well worth it. You should have NRMA down your way with the same services.

Im with RAC in WA you just have to read the fine print as i had to take out top cover or else they would only recover the car and not the trailer

This is the same with most of the manufacturers programs as well

Ok so My advice is go the TOP cover you can get.
Mine is with RACV and has really saved my Bacon a few times.

The first (big one)

Bought a car in Perth whilst on holiday, decided to drive it back.
Broke down basically on the WA/SA border in the middle of nowhere.
RACV paid for accomodation, 300km taxi ride, 4 flights, 20km taxi ride, 6 meals
Then paid for storage fees at the garage where the car was left till a tow truck could get it,
Tow from Perth to Wodonga, and then for the storage fees at the transfer yard on the way over.
Then a hire car for a week whilst it was getting repaired
This was for two adults and a child.

Would have cost me MULTIPLE thousands of $$$$$ but no cost to me and I got 2 phone calls a day checking on us to make sure we were ok and if we needed anything.
They really went above and beyond.

The second (big one)
driving from QLD to Wodonga, the boat trailer wheel sheered off the trailer.
Towed from QLD to my drive way on a special flat bed (trailer was wider than 2.4m)
Paid for meals for us whilst we waited for the towies, and didn't cost me a cent.

I would not drive around with out it to be honest. It covers me in any car I drive, anywhere in Australia, and provided whatever Im towing is legal then it covers that too.

Cheers

Yeah Chriso100 I'm not sure what state you are in but the Top cover is the way to go as that is the only cover that will include your trailer being towed as well. NRMA's top cover is about $185.00 for twelve months.

Apparently the Grey Nomads get their money's worth out of this cover.

Couldn't agree more with the comments re nrma, didn't have the cover when broke down at Christmas.  Thank god I didn't have the camper on the back as it would still be there.  Had Mitsubishi road side assist tow for free to the nearest dealer so not bad. All other insurances I had only covered if you had had an accident, not breakdown. Top nrma cover seems to be the go for me ....

We have an NRMA franchise, but not the roadside bit... Premium cover is the way to go, best to check out what each state offers BUT if you have Vehicle Roadside assist [Holden, Ford etc] they will usually outsource this to the locals, NRMA RACV etc if not in a major city.

Yep... RACV Total Care for me. Saved my bacon coming out of Arkaroola. Total Care taken out on the vehicle covers any trailer being towed. I snapped the axle of my camper clean through in a spot that made it impossible to do a roadside temporary repair. The RAA recovery vehicle had to come from Copley, 120 km away. All towing expenses, 5 nights accommodation in downtown Copley were looked after while a new axle was sourced and fitted. Never saw a bill. The only expense was the repair to the trailer. Everything else was covered. Total Care saved me heaps and more importantly is peace of mind for a minimal outlay of around $180 per annum.

Another vote for the top cover. If you are travelling it is worth every cent. We have the RACQ top cover and had an incident with our camper in WA last year and RACQ were brilliant.  But hopefully we will never have to use them again, but I would not travel without it.   :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup:  Kevin

Maybe a silly question,  but do you have to live in the state to get coverage.  For example,  if you live in Vic,  can you get RACQ coverage?
I know that whatever product you get it will cover you nationwide.

Just thinking that one may offer a better product than the other.  Ive always thought that because im in Vic,  RACV is the only product available to me.

I have continued with RACV even though I moved to NT, and they were happy with this. I thought the AANT might be better for being up here, however they have a limit of 200km for free towing. 200 km is not very far by NT standards! Any way its probably best to check with the provider you prefer. I know of some other very happy customers that have had a mechanical failure on the opposite side of the country and RACV top cover has covered the car and people transport back to the home address.

Yes, you hve to live in the state.  I tried to get RACV cover living in SA (cause in SA cover is for the person, not the vehicle - sucks when we only have one car, but both use it and no cover if the person covered is not physically with the vehicle).  Anyway rang RACV, person on phone said it was ok.  Signed up on line, all accepted including payment.  Only found out it didn't happen when I checked about 4 weeks later when tags hadn't arrived.  Apparently the website and staff were ok with it, but when payment was to go through it was stopped.  They don't want to upset each others state based monopoly.

So we're stuck with RAA cover in my wifes name since she drives it most often - glad nothing happened when I had to drive to Queensland on my own  >:(

RACV Total Care for me, had it for about 14 years now.

I think SAAA also operates in Broken Hill, but from above comments anyone there would probably be better off with NRMA.

We live on the road and upgraded to RACV Total Care. Haven't had to use it, but certainly peace of mind. Our renewal a couple of months ago was $210.
