Daniel Morecombe's alleged killer has been found guilty.
Some closure at last for Daniel's family.

Now for the sentence to happen. Apparently the scumbag has had priors for similar things they just read out in court.

Some closure at last for Daniel's family.

Maybe.  There will be an appeal.  I was very surprised they were able to get the confession into evidence given the circumstances it was obtained under.

I think there will be some harsh times ahead.

Hopefully he will get life.

I bet that's what the parents of the 7 year old he sexually assaulted in 1987 and the 6 year old he sexually assault and almost killed in 1993 said.  It would be good to think that the courts would sentence in a manner that is wanted and needed by the community but unfortunately things like precedents, pre sentence reports which say he didn't get enough hugs as a kid and judges who do not live in the real world mean that sentences are never adequate.  I hope he gets life with no chance of parole as he can never be rehabilitated.

I don't know what it's like in QLD but here in NSW there hasn't been a life sentence handed down by the Supreme Court since 2010 and 190 cases. Unbelievable isn't it.

A reporter on the radio just said that a life sentence in QLD is 20 years with parole after 15!  What a joke.

The judge has to go off what has been handed down before!

This is a crap situation for the family, but that is where the defence can come back and say that what is handed down is to much!!

Oh, and I can't believe that having emphysema for the last two years has anything to do with the decision!!??

I just gave up smoking, it was my choice to smoke and also to give up!! How does that effect the decision of killing another human being!!??
Cheers

Guys, this thread has the possibility of going south very quickly. There are some strong emotions involved in this case and as such, please be VERY mindful of what you post if you want this to stay open.

Well said Craig.

It is very easy to jump up and down and scream and carry on.

My wife worked in the sexual assault unit for years.  Her take is that the vast majority of these crimes are committed by family and 'friends' and these high publicity crimes take away the focus on caring for our kids where they are likely to be hurt.

My 2c.

Just another pedo off the streets.

The Morcombes are a lovely family I have known them for a long time, prior to the event, and they finally have some sort of closure.

My deepest respect for their strength over the years and the commitment that they have made to making Daniel unforgettable and the education they have brought to Australians about these unfortunate types of beings. I could say alot more but don't want to.

RIP Daniel. Deepest thoughts to Bruce, Denise, Deano and Brad.

Its going to cost the taxpayer heaps to keep this scum alive in the 'crowbar motel'. Times like this is when Capital Punishment should be used.
The Morcombes finally get to see some justice but i'm sure they would rather have Daniel back.

G'day folks,

Thank goodness that this evil monster is off our streets and in jail ware some inmates will be looking forward to meeting him!

PS, my condolences and deepest sympathy to the Morcombe family for there tragic loss of such a beautiful teenage son. May Daniel rest in peace and may the Morcombe family hopefully be blessed with so much love from their two other sons.

Kind regards

RLI and family

Minimum for offence is 15 years.

Justice Atkinson set 20 in this case, with recommendation that more time be considered beyond that.

"I am not of the view that you should be released in 20 years’ time ... that is not in my control."
