Who has inspired you?
« on: March 06, 2014, 06:40:43 PM »

On a positive note who has inspired you in life.

Maybe its a friend, a mate, a family member, a speech you heard or saw on youtube.

What did they do that inspired you and how did it change how you viewed the world / life?

Post a link to them if you have one.

I recently meet my heroes from when I was a teenager, spending my days rolling around on a skateboard.

Tony Hawk, Steve Cab and Mike McGill (not to mention a heap of other skaters from back in the day)

They really inspired me by seeing these guys well into their 40's, some in 50's ripping just as hard as they were 25 years ago.

Then last weekend I was lucky enough to met Costa from Gardening Australia and sit down for an hour and a half with him and talk about all sorts of things.
If you ever get a chance to met Costa, do it. His passion for life just energises everyone around him.

My Father (RIP), Mother, Sisters, Wife, and my children, they all inspire me to be a better, greater person.

Mine was a fella called Sam Harris from the States.  A philosopher and neurosurgeon who made me think about life NOW and to take advantage of what we have.

Maj Gen Cosgrove is also an inspiration.  Heard him on podcast on Conversations with Richard Fidler.  Also met him in East Timor and his aides had positive things to say.

cheers

My dad .
For having the selflesness and fortitude to raise and support us four kids that were left at home after a marriage break up ...  By himself through thick and thin, as we travelled  all over Australia at a time when family support services didnt exist ..

Here is the link to the Cosgrove conversation.

Here is the link to the Sam Harris clip that helped me when my mother died of Cancer.  Beware it is a religious based clip but not exactly what you would imagine.  It answered the question of why? for me.

Yeah. My dad. He has been gone nearly 10 years now. If not for him I would not.. I was going to say one thing and then realised it is a whole heap of things.  I enjoyed having him as my best mate and still miss him to this day. Bugger me if I didn't just tear up. It still gets me.

As for others I think Nelson Mandela would have to rate highly. How anybody can move on in life after the way he was treated amazes me.

Does anyone remember the movie "Dead Poets Society"?   My senior school Engligh teacher took us to see the movie and he became our "captain". On the last day of year 12 our class stood one by one on our desks and said "oh captain, my captain". We had our teacher in tears. Mr Whittington was the teachers name and he was an inspiration to so many of us through those years at school. I've never forgotten the influence he had on my life.
