Selling used cars
« on: March 01, 2014, 07:27:57 PM »
Just got a deposit on the 4x4 ute. I can see why people tend to trade in rather than sell privately. Lowballers, tyre kickers and time wasters are everywhere. 9 weeks of fun and frustrations.
Like,

If its advertised for $14,000, means come and have a look, take it for a drive and then if you like it give me a reasonable offer like $13,000 and eventully we will meet in the middle.

Email offers like, " im from Sydney will you take $8,000 and i will fly down this weekend to pick up?"

"No?, how about 10?"

Phone call " Will you take $10,000 for it? , take it or leave it" Leave it thanks.

Bloke comes around with mate who is a mechanic. Mechanic "Mate the exhaust is nearly stuffed" When they left i inspected every inch of the exhaust and its fine except some surface rust.

Whats with people these days.

Do what a mate did when selling his Prado.  Bloke rang up from Dandenong (50 minute drive) and offered 15K cash.  Mate had listed for 23K.  "No worries bloke, I'll take 15K today only" mate said.

Bloke turned up 3 hours later to drop a deposit on it.

"Too late mate, sold it 30 minutes ago"  was my mates reply.  "Sorry for wasting your time champ"...

I know a bloke that will swap for some paintings if you are interested. Can't contact him at the moment as he has run out of download on his internet.

That's Gold. I may do that one next time.

I was selling my sons old car a few months ago. Advertised for $3800.
Bloke emails me with cash offer of $1200. I write back saying he can have it for $4500. He writes back saying its only advertised for $3800 ;D
I don't write back any more.

I must say I am always looking for a great deal when buying a second hand car or even new.

Last second hand one they were asking for $10k, I went and drove it and then offered $6k. Of course the answer was no, so I gave my number and said ring me if they change their mind. After the following weekend they rang and asked if I would do $8k. I declined and once again said ring me if anything changes. After the next weekend they rang and we agreed on $6500.00 as they put a 12 month rego on it.

As for the last new car, it was a bit more painful. They initially offered a $12k trade in, after about a month of back and forth we ended up with a $20k trade in and $2k off purchase price. I can't take the credit for that one as my wife done all the work.

I am honest about what I will pay and you can say no. Also give option to make deal later but I am sure the seeker gets annoyed as they want more.

Always have to remember a car is worth what someone will pay for it.

Thanks

John

Don't think many sellers have an issue with that.  If you actually physically inspect the car and negotiate with them face to face, you can pick up some bargins.  It's the faceless ones that make offers via, phone, text or email without ever looking at it in flesh that grate on people.

I completely agree about the faceless messages.
As a buyer one always wants a bargain. As a seller one always wants the most they can get. Meeting in the middle I guess is the best way to put it.
A couple of examples:

As  BUYER.
I drove to Sydney to look at what was supposed to be a mint condition RA rodeo LT dual cab.
It had a nudge bar, canopy and low kms according to the add. So I was looking at a 1200km round trip. It was advertised at $14k at the time which was market price for a great one at the time (2004 model)
I got there and thought I had gone to the wrong address. Paint was faded and lots of swirl marks. Interior was filthy, broken trim pieces. Drive train had leaks, brakes were shot, tyres were all worn on the inside edge and generally rough condition. Kms were the only thing that were advertised correctly.
It wasn't a bad car, just needed some love to get to where it should have been.
I went over the whole lot with the owner and he wasn't aware of just how bad it was. I worked out what it was going to cost to repair everything and then deducted that from what he was asking.
After about 20min of chatting we agreed on a price of $7k

As a SELLER.
When I sold the rodeo, After I had repaired everything and detailed it so it was immaculate, fitted a bull bar, uhf, good ATs and a few other goodies I advertised it for $15k,
It wasn't that long after I bought it ( I hated the fuel economy of the V6 petrol) I had a couple of older people come and look at it. They wanted Lift in it and a mechanical check.
Happy for both. I renewed the rego and took it where they wanted for the check (fixed the D bushes on the sway bar that came up at the inspection) and sold it for an agreed price of $13k with them paying for the lift as well.
They were happy, I didn't loose anything (didn't make anything either) and they got a great car.

So moral of the storey is presentation is certainly key, as well as making sure you price it where it sits in the market.

I agree with the above. What was working against me the ute was only 4 years old but had nearly 200,000km on it. I think i priced it fair. $22,000 insured value, $17,000 to $19,000 car sales value for one with 100,000 av. km, best trade in offer $11,000. I put it in for $13,800 and sold it for $13,200. 1 owner, full service history clean and in excellent condition.

I should have pushed it off a cliff.
