Carrying bikes on the camper
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:38:24 AM »
I'm running out of ideas. This is the third way I've come up with to carry our bikes.

It involves taking the wheels and handlebars off and stacking them in foam.
The first way was just on a fork mounted rack on top.

But one of the bikes ended up with a broken fork, and the dust got into the gears making them unusable. Not very good for the bikes especially when we upgraded to more expensive ones(my MTB is close to $3000 now).
So we came up with another way. Sitting on their wheels and frame mounted clamp, enclosed in a poly canvas bag.

That also didn't work out as the bag caught the air and acted as a parachute. Ended up having to rope it up. It also didn't keep out the dust or rain and the flapping of the bag wore paint off as did the frame mount.
So we are on to the box that I built. Although it is very light, it looks big and ugly! I really don't like it. I just hope that it does the job.
Any other ideas that people have used that have worked well? Bear in mind that we do a lot of off bitumen travelling on some quite rough roads. Dust and vibration is always a problem.

Nearly cried when I saw all the dust that ended up on my full dura ace road bike when I mounted it on a rack on the CT and went off road.  Emptied the car and put it inside for the rest of the trip. Now take an old bike and are much much happier.  If you spend a fair bit of time off road then the bike would be better on the roof of the car as it would cop less dust and dirt I would think.

A fit person like myself would not consider taking a push bike as jogging every where would be a better option to keep the fitness level up :)

Here is the bike carrier I use on the Landcruiser, they also do a mount for camper trailer draw bars. Unfortunately the bike(s) will still get dusty, but these mounts are designed for extreme off road use. Not cheap, but quality product with great customer service.

$120 - great for carbon frames as nothing touches or rubs.   A little difficult with the camper attached though....

I put one of these torpedo7 rack on a fabricated post over the top of the spare wheel up front. Mount a tow ball on to he post, then it is also sits in a cradle mounted to the spare wheel post. As above though, not out of the dust etc but holds the bikes nice and stable and up high out of there way. Good thing about this setup is if I want to cart the bikes without the camper I just mount the rack onto the car.

I don't have any pictures yet, but will Im to get some soon.
