Organising Jayco Swan ... HELP PLEASE
« on: February 04, 2014, 08:48:29 PM »
We finally placed our order after MUCH deliberation! Wanting to start keeping an eye out for storage options during the wait for delivery.

For now it's just us plus our little 3yr old in the camper. We opted for shelving in the wardrobe.

My question is, what's the best way to set up the camper in terms of storage for clothing, food etc? Any magic ideas? I don't want an outdoor tent setup but also don't want gear sprawled all over beds.

What type of outdoor table are we best to buy? Are the fold-ups best? We do have old recliner-style camp chairs but they're super heavy and large - what's best for packing into the camper?

And lastly, floor covering for the outside. Is the mesh stuff best?

Any tips on keeping the camper organised, so we can get it right from the start, would be very much appreciated. Pics would be great if possible!

Ok, we always set up the awning and use a camp cupboard for our clothing ( they pack small and you can buy form any camping shop. We also have a fold up table outside Long the swan that we put water and general things on. Flooring I use either cgear flooring or the square foam tiles ( which is what we use more). I also use the small blow moulded table that fits in the front boot that I sit the beefeater bugg on. Chairs we have 5 to store which are the standard fold type in bags, they go in the main storage area under the front seat that has the outside hatch, we also fit the clothesline, beach shelter, the pegs and ropes and various kids items.

Thanks swannie :) heaps of awesome advice there. we opted for the fiamma so an outdoor cupboard might not be protected enough, but good to know what others are doing anyway

We are a family, 2 adults, 10,6,3 yo kids ,this is how we load our swan, ours is a 2003 model, I don't know how much different yours will be

We use the front lounge space(under) for spare blankets and towels, also a bathroom type heater is also stored there for winter nights (powered site)
The cupboard/draws to the right of the entry door is for food, cooking condiments, utensils, torches, plates, cups, mugs, and condiments, the reason for that is for access with out opening the whole show up, able to do food stock take and or loading/reloading before a trip, and all reachable without climbing into the van during camps, handy also for roadside lunch stops.
Slide out draw under seat in dining (forward) area contains fry pans, saucepans, the mesh open fire toaster, first aid box, rearward contains Tupperware, extra jackets for real cold stuff also goes in there.
Stand up cupboard we use for clothes, I made shelves for that, much more useful than it being for hanging space, beneath that goes, battery lantern, toilet rolls, paper rolls, spare toilet chemical for the port a potty, big dolphin type torch and a few other bits and pieces.
beneath the sink goes the electric toaster, plastic containers with a host of other camping stuff like matches, dish washing stuff, large stewing pot, tea towels are in the draw just forward of the sink, there is a useless sort of a draw that hasn't got anything in it.
I have a large battery, charge controller, car type radio/stereo, plus power converter in forward of the fridge beneath the wrap around lounge on the driver side of van (if that makes sense).
I have a large folding camp table and 2 folding bench seats that get tied down on the roof rack of the cruiser, we nearly always eat outside under annex, and we also cook meat and bacon outside so it doesn't splatter fat up the canvas walls inside.
The previous owner fitted some 100 mm PVC pipe on the draw bar right across the front of the van for storage of annex poles and also for the poles that go on for the bag end fly's, also a drain pipe for the sink gets folded into half also goes in there.
My model has a big front boot, water hose, power leads, 2nd gas stove, heaps of stuff goes in there, must take charge of that one day, probably stuff in there I didn't know I had.
With this loaded in this way, with 2 9KG gas bottles, full tank of water pretty much loaded to go, it has about 220-250 kg ball weight.

What we found really handy when we had a swan was the shelves in the robe which we ordered from Jayco. Turns into a real usable space. Use it for clothes shoes etc Wouldnt take much to get some knocked up.

We have 2 adults and 3 kids (15, 12, 10) I our 2010 Jayco Swan OB. Everyone packs a small bag with a zip top for long-term clothes which get packed under the club lounge and removed at the destination. Then we sourced at a store similar to 'House' this cupboard storage hanger that clips in the hole in the top of the robe and hangs down half the width of the robe providing 5 shelves for each person to store socks, underwear, t-shirts for small over night stops on the way to the destination. I'll be packing the van for a trip tomorrow, so I might take a photo.
Also we use a rectangle camp table that roles into a long bag (like a camp chair) and it fits neatly through the side storage Hutch. We set that up outside the van and put the kettle and toaster on it to keep the van free during breakfast time.

Also, the best matting is Enduromat. It's a little pricey but will outlast your van and is worth it. Across the Nullabor we free camped a bit and found every where we parked was bull ants nest. Just threw out the enduromat on top and no ants bothered us. We even bought a second one to use as a picnic rug.

For the mesh outside I use CGear multimat as it is brilliant, bit pricey but worth every cent.

As the little one is only 3 you could put her sideways on the back bed then use the other half of the bed for storage
