[Yorkshire accent] "Used to dream of a hair straightener."[/Yorkshire accent]

Thats what i thought too.. when lara asked me if she could take her hair straightener away on a trip I said "no way babe and went into a nice long winded explanation of how 240v  items with heating elements like hair dryers, toasters , kettle ect draw more power.

Lara paid no attention to my explanation and then just said "well at least try it Mr know it all"

Well FCUK me I had no idea a hair straightener drawers only 300w , as she gave me a look of "you moron". "aren't you meant to know this stuff"

So I can say that i am still paying the price for that, esp when she bought a 2000w heater for our last camper , and you guessed it when i said "we cant run that off the inverter " she said "yeah thats what you last time ".

No matter how many times i explain that I had never used a hair straightener so the power usage was an assumption that it would exceed 500watts , the damage is done ...forever  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Always read the data sheet before saying NO babe ;D ;D ;D

Jet ;D ;D

I was the same. The odd part was my wife has two hair straighteners (for what reason i don't know), I can't remember the wattage but they were both quite a bit lower than the Inverter yet only one of the hair straighteners would run!

I have to admit she does only use it on long trips if we are going out or something and usually them we are at a caravan park anyway so our inverter rarely gets used. In hindsight I wouldn't have hard wired a big Inverter I should have just stuck to the smaller plug in version for running the electric blanket on those freezing camping nights.

Yes or no? I have a 1,000 watt modified sine wave inverter, two batteries in the tug with Redarc battery management , 1 x 120ah battery in camper. Any gain in running the 3 way fridge on 240v thru the inverter that is connected to aux battery in the tug when on the move?  Also run a smart charger from inverter to charge battery in the camper while on the move. Inverter and charger travel in the camper. Camper battery not connected to tug battery setup.

We don't use our inverter for anything as practical as a hair straightener ...... but we have used it to run the bread maker, rice cooker and to charge things like portable stereo, cameras, laptops, "i" stuff ect

I've never owned or used an electric blanket before and I probably wouldn't even have camped with some who wanted to use one let along taken one camping myself... In the past!

But I've come to realise that comfortable wife while camping = more camping so I'm liking this idea! Plus if the warmer bed encourages the handbrake to get her kit off at least one extra night while camping then it would be worth while.

Can you tell me; do you only turn it on before bed and off when you jump in or do they run all night?

For us it depends. If we are only camping for a night or two and its freezing we will turn it on before bed and leave it on low overnight. (its only on her side, I am a hot sleeper)

But if its an extended stay then we limit it too just heating the bed before we hop in.

I just learnt that one if the guys in the company i work for uses an inverter to run a flat screen TV?

I thought that was a little too much, he said it keeps his kids happy.

When we go camping we ussually end up kicking a footy or playing cricket to keep the kids entertained and keep us adults away from the esky for an hour or so.

I have a 1000w in the truck and run the Cpap but it won't run my microwave.  ??? Led to believe it is because of the grunt on the start up required.

I have a 300w in the Patrol and will run a slow cooker.  ;D

I run a 620w 4" grinder in my work ute. Only a 600w inverter handles it fine until you near stall the grinder. If you start the car turn up the idle and get the volts up it never stalls.
