Maybe Swapping my ute for an 80 Series - what do i need to ask
« on: January 29, 2014, 12:22:44 PM »
Hi,
Ive been approached by a person who saw my Dual Cab Hilux for sale and has asked if id be interested in a swap for his 80 Series.  I'm interested but i really dont know what i should be on the look out for.  He has said it is no show pony but clean and straight, which suits me fine.  it has 288k on the clock, 1HZ motor. unregistered as it has no current road worthy and he told me it will only take maybe a couple of grand to be on the road.  I was selling my ute as we currently do not use it very often due to me being away a lot but after reading so many great things about the 80 series his approach has sparked some interest from me.

What should i be asking about etc before possibly taking things any further?  He has valued his 80 series at 8k and make the rest up with cash my way.  Here is some pics of the 80.
Cheers Kieran

Looks like it has run bigger tyres than are on it judging by the lift.

I dunno, I'd think long and hard.. its never just *couple a grand* getting things going

Looks like a poverty pack that's had the flare's put on it. If your seriously considering
it, I'd at least pay to have a preliminary RWC done it. At least you'd then have an idea whats associated with getting it on the road mechanically.

Step 1 - Get it inspected by a good mechanic who works on 4wds.

Step 2 - Wait and see what the mechanic reports on.

Any probs with the motor / gearbox / transfer case and your up for big $$$.

Already as mentioned you will need the handbrake looked at and a new set of tyres to match the lift. A full service replacing ALL fluids and filters are on the cards especially the radiator then you also can't forget the brakes.

Good thing on it is the rear bar already and the lift kit as long as the suspension isn't flogged.

Good luck mate as if the Cruiser comes out alright once inspected they are a great machine.

Also check all the hubs. If you need to rebuild swivel hubs, bearings and seals it's not cheap if you can't do it yourself

Check the windscreen, rear screen and cargo window rubbers to see the condition and look around for water ingress or leaks. Check around the battery tray for rust and lift up the front carpets and check where the floor meets the firewall for rust also. Get up under the dash and check all the wiring as well to see if its neat.

Hi Kierentrait
Everyone here has giving you good advice that I would certainly heed, most especially a preliminary RW check from a 4WD mechanic.  What do you think your Hilux is really worth?

I will be taking on all the advice offerered if i choose to go ahead and investigate the possibilites further, I have my Hilux advertised at 22k neg,
His original contact stated would i be interested in a swap with cash my way.

Your not wrong. Pov pak, near 20 year old Cruza with 300k and needing a couple grunge for RWC, is not worth a whole lot.

About 5 years ago I bought a pov pak 80s for $2500. It had around 300kms on the 1HZ, no RWC but itbhad rego. It was a pretty good deal but it was no bargain. Food for thought.

Id be going ,a swap with 18K your way mate  ;D ;D

that is worth 4k unregistered with no roadworthy..

Or tell him you will give him 8K with a full RWC report from a mechanic of your choice.

you swap for 14K change over then he sells your hilux for 18K makes 4k and your stuck with  POS with no RWC worth 2k for parts  seen it many many times before.

def be on alert ..if it was worth 8K he would have sold it for 8K and be offering you cash ..

Going by the front grill she is an early 95 model or older. The paint in the pics looks to be whiter than the factory colour. Has it been resprayed? The paint has more gloss on it than my 100s.

It looks like more than a 2" lift. Could be some dollars in sorting that out. I'm guessing it was ex-NSW or VIC. If you want an 80, sell your Lux and go buy one that already has a RWC.

Agree wholeheartedly, he's dreamin! I know of one 80 series petrol GXL brought of ebay for $5500 around 4 years ago.  My mates son then had to chuck another $6k at it to bring up to speed mechanidcally.

Thanks Gents, Ive informed him I won't take it any further. I'll just sell the ute when a cash buyer comes along.
Cheers

For the best I think Kieran, good luck with the sale mate. You should not have a problem selling the Lux.

Cheers,
Im not in any rush to sell the ute and if it doesnt im not bothered, it's just that it is not being used, Lucky to have had 100km put on it in the last 5 months. so i figure if its not being used it may aswell be moved on and put the cash back in my bank account, plus ive only put it on FB currently.  Same goes for my Harley, it doesnt get ridden so its up for sale also.  Have sold the boat and CT recently, they sold really quickly.
