Campervan for older single lady
« on: January 28, 2014, 06:10:45 PM »
G'day,
this is a bit off topic from camper trailers, and not sure if this topic is OK, but I was hoping to harness wisdom from the the myswag collective.

My mum is over 60, single and is interested in getting a campervan cause she is worried about the physical demands of a camper trailer or caravan. She is also not keen on reversing, parking and driving a car while towing.

Has anyone got any particular recommendations for a campervan that suits a single person. She will largely be sticking to the blacktop, will not need proper 4wd. Budget is probably around $15-25k.

I don't know much about campervans or places to look. Any and all feedback welcomed.

I did notice this, unusual option. Also had a good look through the drifta site at their van fitouts.

I used to work for this mob in Ringwood back when I was a lad after school.
I'd say they have been doing it long enough now to know a thing or two.
I'd be saying that the vida (smaller of the two) or vista would be right up her alley.
The PRV could also work, as its based on a hiace.

Good on her!

Ok, let's look at the basics first.

Does she want or need a second vehicle?
How often does she anticipate using it.

Yep, plenty of second hand hi ace or similar units out there in her price range, but $20k would give her a lot of hiring potential. Does she want to drive to WA or similar, or would it just be easier to fly there and do the trip she aspires too for a few weeks in a rental?

So, IMO, if she wants to be in the road for three or four months of the year, yep, her own rig may be the go. If it's only a month, then hire. In between, she needs to have a think about it.

Thanks for the feedback.
A few answers:
Pretty sure that she will have a second vehicle for around town.
I reckon she will use it for a month or so at a time for a 2 months a year.
Hiring seems to be a good idea if only to work out what does and does not work for her.
A lot of the newer campervans seem pretty expensive.

I think you have it in one.

Send her on a hired trip, and see what she thinks. she may come back and say, yep, this works for me, or she mite say no, it doesn't work.

Another option she could try out is some kind of group trip thru AAT kings or similar. No hastles,  just turn up and enjoy A good way to meet new friends.

If she hasn't done the camping or travelling bit before, then I'd try all bases before making a decision.

(Spoken as a nearly 60 year old,)

She is very familiar with camping and travelling. It is more about finding the right gear/ vehicle solution as a solo older traveller who ain't keen on towing things.

I suspect the functional (but less bling looking) nature a drifta fit out in a relatively modern reliable van might be a good answer.

Still think a hire trip would bring many new insights.
