Maximum tent drop?

G'day guys, just joined the other day after a recommendation from a member on another forum! Gotta say all you've done for me so far is fill my head with wondrous ideas for me to spend my hard-earned on! Anyway me and the old man have undertaken a Camper trailer rebuild recently but we're having a bit of trouble finding a tent suitable for the trailer (The old tent is absolutely buggered) mainly because the drop from the top of the trailer to the ground is 1300mm or so. Anyone got any ideas where we might be able to find a suitable tent? Or is it going to be a custom made job? Heres a couple of pics of where we are up to - Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Myswag Bigrang. We have suppliers up here in Cairns that could assist with your tent. I am sure you would have no problems if you are near a big city.

You might be better off going with a custom made tent and get what you actually want instead of having to settle for what there is.

Cheers mate, haha I'm about as far away from Cairns as you could possibly get on the mainland! Roughly 300kms south of Perth in Bridgetown!. Gettin stuff down to me from Perth is easy enough though, it's more finding something suitabel! We've made a heap of phone calls, everything so far is about 1100-1200mm max drop. A custom made tent sounds like it might have a scary price tag!

Sounds like you'll have to weigh up the cost of a custom made against buying off the shelf and having someone add in the required drop, benefit of altering is that you can put a zip in and have a removable floor.

I'm with Nomad. Would probably be cheaper to get a 1200 drop and then to get someone "local" to make up a new floor to suit.

If you have your springs over your axle, you could try flipping them under and then drop a couple of tyre sizes perhaps?

Get a 1200mm tent and a compressor. Then simply deflate the tyres whenever you set up. Simple.  :cheers:
If you can't afford a compressor, buy a shovel so you dig a hole for each wheel.

Pretty painful really.  Have you ever had to do it?  Plus you soon get sick of it.  Also dropping 100mm will deform your sidewalls a fair bit so would be a bit concerned about any damage it might cause if deflated for a number of days/weeks.

About 4 years ago i had a tent made for my camper (since sold) that had a 1400mm drop.
I had Tambo Campers in Melb custom make it. Cost $4400, but was beautifully made, didn't look any different than the standard drop.
If your on a smaller budget then a off the shelf tent modified would be cheaper.
Or make a side folding hard floor to put tent on.

For reference - I had a rear fold tent made locally (Traralgon, Vic. Yes, not much use to you, sorry) in 2011. 1400mm drop. Annex roof but no walls. $2000 for the canvas work. I made the hoops etc. Very happy camper. :cup: Same company that did the canvas work for O'briens from Dandenong.
