Camping with your furry friends
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:52:29 AM »
Hi all

We are going to start camping with our furry friends with us. We have usually put them in kennels, but were unhappy with their treatment the last time we left them in, so we're going to take them with us from now on if we can.

How do you find traveling with dogs? Our two are pretty good, one is a bit of a wanderer, although they are getting older now and don't really want to go far anymore.

We have a Westie and a fake Kelpie cross (he's actually a boarder collie cross but looks so much like a Kelpie we've stopped correcting people). What do you do with them overnight? We don't really want them in the Penguin, so we're considering either the back of the Ute or a portable kennel.

Thanks
Katie and Brian

We always kept one of those "travel with dogs" books in the glove box.

I use to own a Hilux with a canopy. They would sleep in there with a bowl of water and one of the side windows slightly opened.

Just make sue they go foe a walk before and after bed time.

Never had any problems.

K dog sleeps wherever her mattress is placed. This can be in  the lounge  room, outside in the laundry, in the ct, in the back of the ute or on the back seat of the twin cab.

Klancee is a real kelpie!

Try them in the rear of the truck one nite at home, you'll soon see how they go.

Hi Guys,
This is what we have for our Labrador, Solitaire. That's her guarding the Jayco. It's basically 3 babies play pens ( panels 1200mm) and clips together with the red joiners. Her jumping days are well and truly behind her so no problems there. We made a small gate in one of the panels, saves stepping over it and the best part is, she doesn't have to be on a lead in the parks we have been too. The park we stayed at in Nambucca Heads, we erected the pen at the back of the van, mainly because of the view. Saves the problem of leash around poles, poles come crashing down. For travel, the panels get tied down on the Hawk's roof rack. I've had a huge number of enquiries since we started using it.

We live on the road with our ridgy x. Joined Family Parks Australia as they seem to be the most dog friendly chain. Get the Wikicamps app if you have a smart phone as they show whether free camps and other sites are dog friendly. Make sure your pups are up to date with shots, worming etc and be mindful of ticks. We have a great bed for her we bought from a camping supplies place in Melbourne 'Outdoor Connection' brand...pic below.
If the spelling and grammar are good, it's a post from Lil. If not, the mad Scot is on the keyboard ;)

Thanks everyone for your replies. Short trips i think we'll try the back of the ute, but I like the idea of the playpens as well. We are hoping to do a longer trip with them next year and don't want to tie them up all the time. Rossi the Westie won't be able to jump out of that, and Max won't go anywhere without him.
