Household fridge freezer recommendations please
« on: January 17, 2014, 05:08:45 PM »
Our home fridge freezer compressor has just gone kaput.  It was a Westinghouse Freestyle Rj532S of indeterminate age.... we bought second hand 5 years ago.  Looks like the webber will get a work out tonight and tomorrow cooking all the defrosting meat, mmmm roast lamb, pork, etc.

Any recommendations for brand and/or supplier would be great.  It is not a large one we are looking for just enough for two people, thanks in advance.  Cheers Lesley

Our 9 year old Fisher & Paykel just died, again, so we went and bought a Westinghouse.   We had spent about $700 in the past two years on the Fisher & Paykel and were very disappointed with it. And it was not a cheap one!  Very happy with the set up of the Westinghouse and it was a lot cheaper than the Fisher & Paykel. Time will tell.  Kevin

Had one Fisher and Paykel 15yrs no dramas and another of the same brand about 8, not one issue with either. Would buy another in a heartbeat... But why would I need 3 ;) . Just goes to show that it can just be luck of the drawer I suppose.

When we had the service people out to our Fisher and Paykel he said the quality went down after they stopped being made in Australia and New Zealand. But apparently 9 years now for a fridge is about right.  >:(  Kevin

I have a 13 year old F&P fridge above that now has resided in the garage for the last 5 years and used as a beer fridge and meat freezer. The thing has never missed a beat. Upstairs I have a Bosch with the ice and water and it did a thermostat last year but fixed under warranty.

I have fisher and Paykel pigeon pairs that are over six years old and a Hoover 500 lt fridge that is about 14 years old. Haven't had any problems with fridges so far. Maybe I have been lucky.

When it comes to dishwashers though, I only seem to buy lemons so I won't recommend any.

Thank you everyone for your input, greatly appreciated.  We will be off to The Good Guys & Hardly Normal tomorrow to check them out and see what happens.  We are only two fridges away from the old round fronted single door fridge  of the type that used to last forever.... well almost.  Westinghouse seems to be the favoured one at the minute... she what tomorrow turns up. Cheers Lesley

You will be lucky if a Westinghouse is made in Australia these days. Mine is about5yrs old & made in Thailand. And quite happy with it.

Our new Westinghouse is definitely made in Australia but I guess the big thing now is time always buy extended warranty just in case you have dramas.

About 17yrs ago we had moved town, and didn't have a lot of spare cash. We bought one of those old round cornered fridges when we moved into a rental house, paid bugger all for it maybe $50-, the thing weighed a tonne ( i remember as we had to get it up stairs to the kitchen)...... We were renting a big old qldr house and it was pretty much an empty house, i used to get a bit of entertainment from listening to the old fridge kick in late at night when the place was quiet...... the old beast sounded like an old crank start single southern cross coming to life, it used to dim the lights in the old house an all..... hehe

Hey Barrabrat, those old fridges were great, noisy but great.  I remember the handles sometimes used to come off if you pulled them too hard! Came in great colours, cream, cream or cream lol.

Hey GG go back and wind the dude up for some extras. Hi sense is a Chinese manufacturer , they now own F&P. and is another reason F&Ps quality has dropped further after there move to Thailand few years ago.

Westinghouse is Electrolux and yes are closing there Australian fridge line, sadly.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

After much consideration and checking out numerous fridges at various retail locations and the valuable insight from all the My Swaggers we finally chose a Westinghouse WBM430WB-R (sticker says Made In Australia) Upside Down combination. It was great to get one of the last Aussie made fridges from Orange NSW before the manufacturing facility closes. It has just arrived and is great.  Thanks again to everyone for your assistance in enabling us to make an informed decision to suit our needs. Cheers Lesley
