Anyone got an XTZ660 Tenere ?
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:05:50 PM »
Looking at getting a dirt bike I can travel a lot further on, these seem to fit the bill, anyone got one they care to comment on ? There is a Beemer and the trusty old KLR650 in this segment, maybe even a KTM, but being a Yammi fella.. And I like the look of the Tenere.

I love the XT660 Tenere. I have had a ride on one a while back, but that's it. My usual ride is a WR450f, but my dad has a KLR650.

The KLRs are good value and will do a fairly good job touring, either on or off road (just don't drop it - they are heavy).

There are a lot of 2nd hand KLRs around at a good price / value, but if you are like me, a Yammy Man, you can't go past the Tenere.

DRZ - good value for money, without too many bells and whistles. Parts are easy to get and they are plenty of them around.

if a BMW GS was within reasonable price range, I'd grab one of them... but they are close to $27k now I believe.

I wouldn't consider my DR650 a touring bike by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure if you threw wnough coin at it you could make it more comfortable & capable. What it does do well is the daily commute with enough poke to keep me interested as well as the ability to do a bit of dirt work. Parts & upgrades are everywhere for the DR. Some say it's the worlds best selling dual sport & plenty of blokes tart them up & cover big miles on them.
Why did I buy one over the KLR650 which I was also considering? Straight out of the box the DR ate the KLR. The DR has no fairings to damage if I drop it. The DR is simple like dirt, dead easy to service & as I mentioned parts are everywhere.
Would I buy it again if I was to do it all again? Probably.
Cheers, MIke.

Ahhh a boxer Beemer, unfortunately they are a bit too everything for me, costly, bulky, weighty, in the same leauge as the Super Tenere and the KTM 990 or 1190, I'm looking for the half size bike class  which the Beemer Sertao and 660 Tenere fits into, a KTM640 adventure if they still made them would also be on the short list. Just got to get off this desert island and visit a bike shop..

I agree, i don't buy the hardcore BMW owners who reakon they are full on off roaders. A road bike for dirt roads. However used they are a bargain.$10,000 will get a good one. What about a BMW/ Triumph 800's? I used to have a XR650 and single cylinder big bores suck on road riding.

advrider.com has your answer.

I've got a Triumph Tiger 800xc, does the big K's, good in the sand if you keep the pace up. I've found the 600+ singles great for the track once you're there, but a PITA doing distance. Horses for courses, a bit like CT's I suppose!

Back to the original post: Yamaha XTZ660, heavy, underpowered, very tall in the seat, expensive. Nice standard suspension, brakes, luggage attachment points, pretty bike.

Nephew has a XT660, and it's not that much lighter than the Triumph.

Anyway, in the overall scheme of things, it doesn't matter a rats, just as long as you get out there and ride.

Hadn't even thought about the Tiger, nice machine !  Heavier, smaller tank and quite a bit dearer than a Tenere though, same seat height. As you say horses for courses, everything is a compromise :) definitely like CTs as long as you have something, get out and use it. I will be visiting a Triumph dealer now though !

The Tiger suits my requirements to a tee.

Good off road, two up, long distance. Reliable and economical to run (19ltr tank gets 400km). You can get a second hand one for 12k + if you're quick when they come up.

Small | Large

If you're after sometime to rip up the trails it's not the bike, the DRZ would be better.

Nice shot out in the sticks, where was that taken Still_riding ? I won't  need it for ripping thru the forest, I have the WR for that, my ideas are morphing the more I look, to the point where I've sent an email off to the local ( Localish ) Beemer dealer about test riding a F800 GS, very similar bike to the Tiger. Need to track down a Triumph dealer so I can do likewise with the Tiger.  I've got a friend with a R1200GS and it is too bulky for my liking. The 800s are a lot less.

Road from Birdsville to Big Red, October this year. (My 50th Birthday ride).

The WR are a hoot! The GS 800's are cool, heaps of people take them on some epic adventures. (Google 'Radioman rides the world'.) But I reckon buying a BMW is like buying a Jayco...people who ride other brands may shun you..

The 2014 Vstrom is getting good reviews.

My alternative to cheap import trailers;

Have criss crossed this great country of ours on both a 650 BMW and a couple of boxer BMW GSs.  Reliability is second to none and is a major consideration when out on a track in the middle of nowhere.  The big GSs were pigs in the sand and gave me lots of freckle puckering moments.  Carried all my gear, tent, food, water, spares, etc so they were not light.  If I did it again, my dodgy back will never allow it unfortuneatly, I would go for a DR650.  Bullet proof donk, parts and accessories everywhere and easy to fix with basic tools.

Are they an option lost?  I thought so on the last ones but should be no cost.

Mate of mine I photograph with is national parts dude for triumph and he said they cant give away the mags! They are 50:1 on spoked.. (or were when I spoke to him about it couple yrs ago)
I'd assume they would be an option on all these type of bikes.. I'll ask mate from BMW, hes involved in running the GS Safari the cost difference.

And it's a good trip this year.  But $3500 I think.
