Warning to others re DIY Servicing...Yes...my stuff up...
« on: January 06, 2014, 06:58:38 PM »
As some of you will be aware I broke down approx 100ks from our destination Coral Bay on New Years Eve and have been waiting for the diagnosis from the mech in Carnarvon for the past week...

note : the top of the radiator blew off with no or little warning resulting in said auto overheating very rapidly.... >:(

My main worry was head gasket  :'(

Well the diagnosis is in ... broken fan belts resulting in new radiator required...

Myself ..very embarrassed  as I service the vehicle myself and in this case the full service I completed before the trip didn't change belts... :-[ :-[ :-[

Cost towing excess $245 + $953 for new radiator and labour....all of which could have been avoided if I checked fan belts  >:(

Good news is the family haven't lost complete faith in me and we set off tomorrow and try and salvage the rest of the holiday at Ningaloo... ;D

Lucky I just changed mine and kept the old ones for spares :)
Look at the bright side, at least it wasn't a HG ;D don't forget the pulleys either.

Enjoy the rest of the trip

Yep those bloody pulleys lol oh the memories of the pain.

As for keeping the old as spares never thought about that, but its a seriously good idea.

Some vehicles it pays to check the idler pulleys whilst the belts are off just to see if there is any play in the bearings or if they spin freely

Black Diamond services his own truck . ln fact he changes his plugs so often he keeps the plug socket on top of the starter motor . well that's where we found it after he lost it  :-[ :-[ :-[ Any comment Johnboy  ??? ???

I can’t talk as just before Xmas I serviced my wife’s car, but when changing the oil filter I didn’t check to make sure the rubber ring from the old oil filter also came off.

So when I finished the service,  I start the car and after 30 seconds when the oil pressure had built up oil was sent spraying all over the motor and my nice clean garage floor. Turns out oil filters don’t work too work when 2 rubber rings are attached.

You're not alone with that mistake!

Yep, I just had my serpentine belt wonder off and ended up with two belts! one wrapped around the fan  >:(
I thought it was just a dodgy belt as I had changed it not long ago along with the tensioner bearing (Disco 300TDI). Ended up being the tensioner itself was not returning quick enough after revving and belt came loose. This was due to the fibrous gasket worn out where the tensioner and housing meet. I should have changed the whole tensioner and not just the bearing as it was original and hence 17 years old  ;D

should only take you an extra 5 seconds to change the belt shouldn't it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQhfcdQf1QA
