Melbourne campground near snow

Hi guys, so it looks like we will be in melbourne around July August this year. I'm thinking id like a place not in the snow I.e not a mountains drive but close by. So we could drive up to snow.

Hoping someone can recommend a place to use as a bit of a base camp. Wouldn't mind setting up for a couple weeks and then seeing the areas maybe doing an overnight or two...

Any recommendations, don't really want to drive all the way up into the middle for this current time.

I like the idea of dargo does it snow there? Or is it close by?

x2 keep in mind it is ski season and not 4wd season therefore the High country 4wd tracks are closed until November.

Other areas are Bright and Mount Beauty and there abouts, further from Melbourne but might be on the way for you.

Big River - around Woods Point, Matlock, a fair few tracks are still open. Back of Marysville?

Tolmie is pretty cold, might even be snowing at that time of year.

How about sheepyard flats, close to Buller, free and should be quiet.

You wont be able to get to many places up high as seasonal closures hit in June.

What do you call close by?
Woods Point, Jamieson (Knockwood top camping spot with dunnys but no showers)etc...

Good spots to take kids
Lake mountain (can get $$$)
Mt Donna Buang ($10 toboggan hire)

If you head out to Dargo there will still be a lot of tracks open, but High Pains rd is a seasonally close which limits travel direction.

My suggestion would be somewhere between Jamieson and Gaffneys Creek, there's a heap of good driving and things to see all within a short distance. Snow, huts, fishing, driving,more than one campground to choose from, the lake and brewery, a lot of history and gold to name a few.

Hi Guys,
thanks for all the great ideas so far.
Power is not a requirement, been camped out at Mystery Bay NSW for 3 weeks over XMAS and todays the first day the genie has run to charge batteries (crappy weather!)

Was trying to look for somewhere near some of the nice places in VIC i.e high country, but at the same time maybe near snow so we can take the kids up there, but the wife has said she'd prefer not to camp in snow.

I expect we would be coming off Tasmania around may/june...

Im glad i found out about the closures for seasonal for the high country... I suppose it makes sense with snow and everything.

Campsites along the Wellington River north of Licola are good. A drive up the hill gets you snow most of the time in winter although it has been patchy over the last couple of years.

Dargo is also good as others have mentioned - just depends on the season.

I agree with Tim, Licola for easy access to snow without the worry of gates.

If you want to do a bit of 4x4ing in the snow, PM me, would be happy to catch up for a play in the snow.

Late May normally sees a few good systems through bringing snow to low levels.

Queens Birthday weekend they close after it....
but we've had snow up on Mt Skene in December before.... so anything is possible.

Comet Flat is good, but very cold and damp.. right on the river bend there, and only 5 min drive back into Woods...
