Canvas & doing the right thing.

Hi,
Although I introduced myself on another thread, this is my 1st real post.
I'm new to this Camper Trailer stuff and am in the middle of researching the "perfect" camper trailer. LOL. (Although at the cheaper end of the market.)
But I must say I'm confused.... and I hope you can set me straight on things.
Being an old 6th generation Australian, I'm trying to do the right thing and intend to buy Australian made. I have found several camper manufacturers (in the Sydney area) that are, without doubt, manufacturing their trailers in Australia. All of them claim to have an "All Australian" product. However....ALL of them advertise that their tents are made using "ripstop" canvas. From what I can gather "Ripstop" is a word used in conjunction with Chinese made canvas. Am I wrong here? I know that "Ripstop" is a manufacturing method designed to strengthen canvas, but is any of it made in Australia?

Im happy to be corrected but to my knowledge I am not aware of any rip stop canvas made here.  Wax converters dynaproof canvas and a couple of others whose names escape me  at the moment are tho only ones I've seen.  :cheers:

The info you've just supplied me confirms that none of the so called all Australian camper trailers that I've been looking at are "ALL Australian".
Their advertising is misleading, and I must say I'm disappointed.
I guess I'll have to start looking at more expensive items....or good second hand stuff.

Welcome to the world of camper trailer marketing.

There is less than a dozen (that I know of) reputable dealers, the rest are worse than a dodgy second hand car salesman.

If you get up the Central Coast (Charmhaven) go and talk to Terry the owner of the business. I bought one of his campers a little over 12 months ago and very pleased. The bloke is willing to help

IMHO,

You can't go past a Customline camper under the 15k bracket.

Another Customline supporter. The off road starts at under 10k. Not bad for a Genuine Australian built camper.

The MDC will give you more fruit for your money.

The Customline won't offer as much, but (IMHO, only), is ten times what anything MDC will offer in quality.

I just got back today from a week at seal rocks in our recently purchased (second hand) central coast camper. I would have to agree with shakey about the central coast campers being worth a look. I was originally looking to buy an import only because a new Australian made trailer was out of my price range but if you have the time to go out and look at some second hand ones there will be some real bargains out there.

I have a Customline Delux off road and am more than happy with it. My mate looking at the same time bought a MDC after also considering a Customline. He is happy with his but has had to fix niggling issues on an ongoing basis but says for the amount he uses his trailer the money saved is worth it.

Go with what makes you comfortable at the end of the day.

I hope those all Aussie manufacturers are using Australian made welding machines and consumables, Aussie made sewing machines, and only eating pies for lunch!!!  ;D

Seriously, I reckon it's IMPOSSIBLE these days to build a 100% 'Australian' camper.

I took some time out yesterday to have a look at some of these tents that were set up in showrooms and must say that even the imported stuff has varying levels of quality.
One showroom had two differing manufacturers tents on display. One was a big, booffy, sloppy and un-impressive (apart from size) tent. It is this same tent that is supplied on at least 4 different manufacturers trailers, although in different colours.
The others were OzTrail tents. Now, I walked out of there being quite impressed with OzTrails quality & price. Nice, tight, well cut canvas, well sewn, insulated roofs, very neat and tidy. If I didn't know it was made from imported canvas, I'd buy one right now. But sadly its not just the canvas that's imported, its the whole damn thing. I was told by the salesman, who was quite upfront about all his tents being Chinese made, that to stay competitive, he is compelled to supply cheap tents.
I introduced myself by saying "at the bottom of a steep learning curve" and its proving to be exactly that.
I tend to agree with Beatle, "ALL AUSTRALIAN" is ALLmost IMPOSSIBLE

I'm a Trackabout owner and a very happy one at that (actually, is there any other kind?) but I would have to agree with the comments above regarding bang-for-buck with Customline. If you are cash strapped but want the real deal on Auusie made campers with Dynaproof canvass, it's hard to go past them.

Best thing to do is maybe hire a couple before you spend your hard earned money.
We can talk all day about Australian made this and Chinese made that,  but at the end of the day it's your money and your camper.
