Swags on a hard floor camper trailer

My wife and I are in the proceeds of looking for a new camper trailer. I want to get a hard floor but my wife doesn't want the kids on the floor, as she says that in extremely cold weather the kids will get cold as there is an air space.
I've spent many a camping trip in a swag but never noticed the cold as I was directly on the ground.
Has anyone experienced sleeping directly on a hard floor and noticed the cold coming through from the bottom?

A swag or decent self inflater will insulate them from underneath........an air bed would be cruel they suck the cold up in no time flat.

Hi Angus,

We place a rubber backed picnic rug on the hard floor. Its nice & warm for your feet & our kids have never complained in there swags that its cold. It also keeps the camper floor clean as you just pick it up & shake it outside to clean.

Hard floor will be drier and as above good bedding and cold is not an issue

We've made it a bit of a tradition that on our kids 10th birthday they receive a swag - in our case it's a Burke & Wills one.  We decided to do it as we spend a lot of time camping and its a lot easier when the kids deal with their own bedding.  All I need to do is throw it on the roof rack.

Plus its something they will keep for life if they look after it.

Both our grandkids have slept on the hard floor of the camper for about 5 years in a row. Now they are in their swags out in the annex

Who takes kids camping ????? I just fill up the dog bowl with water and leave the laundry window open a tad, I am responsible I do ask the neighbours to top up the water bowl every week

Our kids have slept on the floor of our CT since day one. They both started off sharing a double swag and now have roman self inflating mattresses (less bulky) and a quality sleeping bag each. They are now 9 and 5. Miss 9 loves her swag and has indicated that she wants to relocate to the annex.

As stated by others the kids have never complained and the hard floor is off the ground and nice and dry. I may also look at an oz tent for them in the near future as I can use it as an annex wall due to its square flat fronted design.

Hi,
   I'm curious that cold is even a problem.


We sleep on snow using a closed cell foam mat, or a Thermarest, so similar should overcome any heat conduction to a metal floor in a much warmer climate.

Yeah, not really a problem at the moment, air con would be nice about now.
We do a fair bit of travelling through the deserts in winter, can get down to -4 deg around Alice.

Our "hard floor" is actually a rather thick fibreglass covered insulation type thing.  I don't see or feel any problem with "cold".  I think you'd have more issues with the tent walls personally.

you could always look at adding some sort of marine carpet or the like to the floor to act as an insulator, just make it attach with something that allows easy removal for cleaning. throw a self inflating matress on top of that and a decent minus rated sleeping bag, and i can't see the cold being a problem then.

My youngest daughter (7) sleeps on the floor in the KK. She has an inflatable matress and she sleeps just fine. No complaints from her.

When we had a soft floor camper our kids slept on stretchers but they had a thin foam mattress on top (came with the oztrail bunks) for insulation, I think they'd have been fine sleeping on that foam mattress directly on the floor actually. We all had self inflating mattresses in tents for a bit too, I don't think it was any colder really (just not as comfy as a thick camper mattress for us lol).
Now the kids have swags and we recently brought a hard floor. They're aged 9 and 11 (just about) so are more than happy to sleep out on their own, but the idea is that if the weather is nasty we'd just roll the swags out in the tend on the hardfloor.

It depends how old your kids are, I think with several different ideas (for a bit of insulation between them and any floor) they will be fine. If they're 8yrs onwards then swags might be a good considerations as well, particularly as they get older and like more independence, it makes it a good investment. Really you wouldn't even have to roll the swags up, you could just throw them on your CT bed (if they were staying clean and dry in the tent)

We've had the kids sleeping on a KK floor in -5c temps with no dramas - self inflating mats and -5c sleeping bags with inserts etc.
