Bribie Island - The soft stuff
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:04:04 PM »
Hey Swaggers,

Hit Bribie Island yesterday to take the kids to freshwater lagoon. It is a fantastic spot. Lagoon is shallow enough for the young kids to feel safe and surprisingly not crowded. this is the second time we have ventured there on the xmas holidays, and still, at most, 15 4x4's sit around this lagoon.

Anyway, heading back from the day at the lagoon, we were confronted with a line-up of about 15 cars trying to get off the beach. Tide was high and seemed the soft sand was extra soft today, or people were just not expecting to get bogged like the 5 others before them.

Check the tractor in the background, its pulling that gold car, racing the tide. Think this was about 2:30pm, high tide was at 4 i think

duno what this dude did, but he must of done it hard :)

When the tide is low, there is plenty of the hard stuff to drive on

Anyway, great place to visit, dont tell too many people though, I like it uncrowded ;)

Hope everyone is having a safe and fun xmas / new years

Cheers

Justin

yeah I don't know what it is about Bribie. Do people think that because you don't catch a barge to the beach that you don't need to let you tyre pressure down?

One guy got stuck coming onto the beach. 20 meters onto the cutting, bang, stuck. got out, started letting his tyres down.

Made me smile a little  ;D but peeved off a lot of people waiting to exit.

Exactly the same.  Have had people give smart arse comment about being soft whilst letting my tyres down last time I didn't take them to low about 22 and then quickly let them down 18. After seeing a disco bogged on the inland track

Yep we were there yesterday and came off the beach at 1.30ish and were confronted with a similar situation, most of the bogged guys didn't have lowered tyre pressures and didn't have their own recovery gear...

I don't understand why people aren't willing to let their tyres down and take the necessary recovery gear...

What got me was impatient people not willing to let the track clear or wait their turn in the line of vehicles, these muppets often got bogged too then were also looking for help... After 40 minutes I couldn't stand it any longer and took off, funny I didn't have any issues with my lower pressures.

Same thing happens at South Ballina beach also, cars constantly getting bogged at the Northern exit and all drivers with no idea about reducing tyre pressures.

Yep.
Last Friday, leaning on the desk of ballina beach village checking in, about 4.30pm right time{11.15 whatever time} when a rather red faced gentleman crashed thru the door and announced," I'm bogged, $50 if you snatch me out. 6 feet short of the corduroy."
Tyres down? He didn't answer that one.
I told him to give me a bit of time to at least unhitch the trailer on the site and give the wife and youngen something to do.
No, away he went with the number of the towing service down the road.

Lady behind the counter said there had been quite a few tow jobs this week including 2 non 4wd.
The bloke down the road with his big yellow tractor was $200 a pop.

Didn't put my vehicle on the beach during the weekend.
When the tides were right it was blowing a stiff northerly.
No point letting the tyres down for that.

Havent been to South Ballina beach park for a few years now and by the sounds of it not much has changed in regards to the way people get stuck on the beach access track .Loved the park when John and Rosey managed the place .

I reckon some of the people may not do it due to the fact they don't have the facility to pump them back up again when they are done on the beach, especially if they are just day tripping. The rest of them are probably your average joe with not a clue and a four wheel drive. Had to help a bloke out on Fraser once, bogged to the rear axle in an F-250. Pushed for a bit and noticed rear wheels spinning only. Got it in 4wd mate?? Yeah, it's a four wheel drive, he says like I am a retard. Walked around to the cab, leant over the passenger seat, told him to push on the clutch and moved the stick from 2wd to 4wd. He drove away like he was on bitumen and didn't even say thanks.....

another spot that gets its fair share of "boggings" is the entrance to Freshwater Camp Ground on Teewah beach.
When we have camped their in the past we often take a table down and have happy hour watching the antics and stunt driving.
And again tyre pressures at road pressure.

Defiantly worth a trip.

We use to go at least once a month. Annual pass from the bait shop was around $114.

We would set up in the morning, deploy the the gazebo and enjoy the day.

Watching idiots in their newly purchased 4wd's, old and new, get stuck. Even when they are provided advice from those more experienced.

It is a great place for kids as there are no tides or currents in the lagoon.

Sometimes the lagoon meets up with the ocean which will cause a bit of a creek crossing.

lucky for you it was a Toyota handbrake...gave you the chance to nearly make it to the ramp  ;D ;D

nope nothing has changed, vehicles getting bogged heaps there yesterday, including one that blew a clutch i was told by a mate (my guess whilst bogged) and had to be recovered by a front end loader.
i helped out another guy yesterday who informed me when we arrived to exit the beach, that he just couldn't seem to get up the exit. i asked if he'd reduced his tyre pressure and he said yes...asked to what and he said he didn't know as he didn't have a gauge. checked first tyre and it was 28 psi, so reduced to 18 psi all round and up he drove on next attempt. the guy listened to all the advice i gave him Re: watching how he drives with reduced tyre pressures etc...so hopefully that's one less person with NFI to get bogged there again.

Cloutys, is the lagoon running out to the beach mate, or is it sealed as a lake so to speak, I'm gunna take the family up on sat for the day to get away from the heat. Do a bit of fishing and swimming.

Also how much beach is there ?? Is being on the beach at high tide an issue, gunna try and get up the lagoon early (8 or so), the tides not high until 1130 odd, which suits us well means we can get up there and have the day, with plenty of beach to get home on.

Any info is appreciated.

hey Swannie

I was up there 2 weeks ago and the lagoon was not flowing to the ocean. The water temp in the lagoon was pretty warm though.

Plenty of beach at high tide, although today (as well as yesterday) are king tides I think but I would expect there should still be ample beach to drive on.

Lagoon is only about 1k from the beach entrance, so not far to drive on the soft sand if you have too.

Temp is supposed to be 37 today, make sure you take some shade and something to cool you down ;)

If you hit the beach at 8ish it should be fine.. High tide for us yesterday was at 9:30am and we hit the beach at about 11ish.. At that time there was probably about 10 metres of hardish sand..
The lagoon wasn't running out into the ocean, there's a sh!t load of sand in front of the lagoon so I think it might be some time before it flows again..
