Met a chap a few years ago who for his honeymoon, yes honeymoon, in the 60s loaded up the farm falcon ute a drove to Alice springs from WA on what is now the Great Central Road. No.1 rule: drive to the conditions.
G'day rossm,
My parents who got married in the late 60's packed up my old mans work ute, a Morris Ute which had a canvas canopy on the back (so was also equipped for extensive travel

) and for their honeymoon drove from Cairns to Sydney, I believe because they wanted to see a big city, both had only ever lived in FNQ........
From Sydney headed west than north up through Alice Springs, think they continued north till probably Tennant Creek, then back across the Barkly through Mt Isa, Charters Towers then home again..... pretty much the whole time camping from the Morris Ute....... I've included a pic of a Morris Ute, for those that aren't familiar... think they were powered by a big 1ltr or 1.5 ltr..... oh and they did it during winter time, I reckon the old man did this by choice to allow for plenty of necessary cuddling, hehe.........
