Which is the most expensive National Park??

Goolawah National Park in NSW is asking $23 per night per Adult minimum 2 persons. $8 for anyone else over 12yrs

Looking at racecourse campground -
There is a drop toilet.

No running water according to the website.

Am I out of touch or is this opportunistic theft on behalf of the NP.

Went to Point Plomer a few weeks ago....$10 per person...plus $7 per day for your vehicle.........much nicer place, but best of luck if you want to go at xmas !!

Or go to Delicate private campground...$30 per site...powered ones available as well..

We rarely go to van parks or nat parks...cost is one of the reasons !!

I agree we try not to go to van parks. If you also avoid NP where do you finally go.
I ask this because of genuine interest in finding cheaper or free site similar to NP sites.
Can you offer some suggestions.

Jeff, there are plenty NP sites that are very nice, very close to Sydney that are still free.

I can suggest a few if you want to PM me.

These days we use both the free sites and caravan parks. The kids like the jumping pillows and pools and beach as much as the rivers, bush and kangaroos, so we tend to mix it up a bit.


Now about the original post - Kosciuszko - take a credit card..............
Not included in standard NP pass either.  ???
Vaso's $4.70 a tub at IGA........

Pretty much any National Park that ParksVic charge for now is a absolute shafting. $19 for the use of a single pit toilet in a remote spot, or a hell of a lot more for popular spots like the prom, cape Conran, grampians etc. makes you want to use a caravan park. Cape Conran charged $38 for a night last school holidays. Went and found a free spot down the road for the next few days.

We went into Cape Conran early November, after a visit to the rangers office, we hit the road again, what a rip off !!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Qld I've only ever seen 1 price per adult per night for NP camping since fees were introduced, which is up to around $5.80 or thereabouts. Then there are vehicle permits for a few areas. Admittedly I haven't camped north of Rockhampton, but in SE Qld at least this is the case. The NSW fee for a vehicle in a NP is a sham. I had a look at Bald Rock camp ground near Tenterfield and the fee was $10 per adult, $7 or $8 for the vehicle and $5 for kids. What a joke, you can stay in many caravan parks for that kind of coin and you get power, water and amenity block facilities. Bald Rock had 1 unisex pit toilet and water that needed boiling. You guys down south are definitely getting a raw deal. I have no desire to pay to stay at any NSW NP at those kinds of rates.

On a 3 week trip atm and our most expensive has been Royal National Park Bonnyvale campsite. I can't remember the exact break down but for two adults and one paying child (and two younger) plus an $11 a day vehicle fee, two nights was over $90! It's a nice spot and I'm glad we experienced it but we wouldn't go there again for the price.

If you are going to use NP then I think you must buy a yearly pass .
In NSW theses are not expensive ,I think $65

The yearly pass is for vehicles only and you still need to pay for your stay. On average I thinks it's $10 or $11 a day for a vehicle. It does make a lot of sense to get an annual all parks pass for the car.

What I don't get is why the nightly costs are so different from one park and one state to another and why we have to pay so much in some parks and so little in others.

Either way we are paying twice as they parks are a national asset that we pay for through taxes.

In theory the pricing should be there to control supply and demand and stop effectively people living in the parks for extended periods. But instead of cranking up the price, they could do more to limit the length of stay, the size of groups, the number of times in a year you can stay, time you can book ahead and so on.

I agree Bonnie Vale is too expensive, but its a great spot too. Its right on a beach, has big sites, very good grass, nearby shops, walks, good showers with plenty of free hot water, wash up area, dedicated areas for tens, vans and CT's.

But the varying costs are like caravan parks for unpowered sites.. some of them are as expensive as a motel room.

Depends on where you want to go....and what sort of campground you are happy with..

Right on the coast and free are 2 words that don't mix, but inland a bit ( or a lot ) there are state forests, nat parks etc that are all free..

Camps 6 book or wikicamps ( if you have a phone that will play its app ) will get you a lot of free camps..

Even out the back of some pubs ( pub with no beer is one ).....or even in a nearby forest ( some spots have toilets, some not )..

Where do you want to go roughly ?

Hi,
  In my innocence I bought an annual pass when we hit NSW.


It did seem ironic that we could stay all day and use the toilets, free gas BBQ and nice picnic facilities for free, BUT, if we rocked up at late evening to sleep in what was little more than a carpark, we were expected to pay fees.

After a little research, i think Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbor is the most expensive. Upwards of $50/night for a 4mx4m site and no fires. Yikes.

Some of the spots in Tassie were getting up in price before we left there this year, i hear they have shut a few of the free camps we enjoyed just after we left.
St Helens was amazing and free, but cradle mountain made us turn back and find free camps at the price after you got a parks pass.
We had a parks pass but it cost's alot if you need one for every state and with no plans we dont know how long we are staying in each.
We have miners rights for Vic that sit idle as i am not in QLD...
Just an extra cost that they say is to help but is pushing a lot away.
In saying that i have no dramas paying for sites, but i dont like being ripped off.

When we go away for weeks at a time, it almost becomes a challenge to see how much camping we can do WITHOUT paying...

More the principle rather than the price.....can't quite work out how you can camp in a state forest , with toilets and bbq's...for free.....then go down the road 5 k's and pay to use a nat park ??

But if you want to camp near the ocean, you really have no choice..

Not that I've been there, but try Green Patch at Jervis Bay - large site of $49 per day plus on top of that there is a per person charge of $11 per adult

Close to a NP, however it is part of the resort (Voyages, lease owned by I.L.C.), more like a Caravan park. NT residents get access to the NP free, those entry fees gotta hurt visitors though!
