Most of my camping gear came from other peoples campsites... Thanks for the generosity... Lol....NOT

I have never had a problem while camping but it is always in the back of my mind that one day I will return to camp and something if not everything will be gone.

A couple of years ago someone broke into my patrol just before Easter and helped themselves to my fridge, uhfs, GPS, camping gear etc. my off road box trailer was knocked off last year and someone also broke into my house. I live in a good area with pretty much one way in and out but it doesn't deter them.

I trust nobody, and I pounce out of bed at any noise during the night now to check things out.

Hi,
I think you have to assess the location.

I had my wallet lifted from my jeans hanging on the shower door in the CP in Mt Isa. The wallet was replaced minus the cash so I was none the wiser till I went to pay on check-out. (either that or the Mrs went on a secret spending spree)

I suspect I was the victim of a local with a cunning modus operandi.

A small change to our showering habits happened after that incident

We have often stopped at a spot, checked it out and moved on, some times just on 'gut feelings'.

At Brewarrina for example, we found a nice spot by the river, but a bit of a scout around revealed  fire rings and evidence of rough sleeping in the bushes and under the bridge. Never a good sign.
A notice board nearby had an advertisement from the local CP offering a 'secure' area for camping, and that confirmed our suspicions that trouble could be around after dark and we moved right out of town for the night.

Anywhere with an attraction to locals to visit at night for drugs/sex is best avoided, especially on warm moonlit weekends.

Other places where you know there isn't anyone for miles, and there is no chance of being visited surreptitiously in the night the keys can stay in the ignition, and nothing gets locked up.

cheers

When there was a $10 bounty on foxtails in Vic about 10 years ago,me and a mate were doing all right out of it getting 15-20 a week.Went out one night, shot 5 and had the tails sitting in the tray of my Toyota.Went to work at the garage and parked the ute out the side.Came out at lunch time and no tails in the back.Checked with the office girl, she said there was some dodgy looking blokes parked out there earlier. She described the car so I went looking for em.Found the car at another garage in town, they were not there so I had a look in their car and there's my $50 worth of tails hidden on the back floor.Rang the local copper,he came up,had a look, told me to leave it with him. When these jokers came to pick up their car the cop was waiting round the corner for them. They rang me to say they pulled them up,when I pulled up in my ute beside them,I could see one of these turds trying to push something further under the seat.So they got done for theft, big deal.Copper also did him for drink driving as a bonus. Made my day.
