Schoolies

Our youngun is in his last week of grade 12 and off to schoolies on Saturday. One consolation is that at least he is 18.
I know it is a right of passage etc but still can't help worrying. Biggest worry is that I hope he doesn't get up to stuff that I did at that age, more good luck than management I am still here if you get my drift. 



Anyway I hope any other myswaggers that are in the same boat as me have a safe week for you & your graduate and they come home in one piece.

It is a worry mate. I am sure your boy will be fine. After all you have brought him up to know right from wrong. 1% of schoolies cause 99% of problems.
My oldest didn't go to schoolies. He left at year 10 and is now in his 2nd year of electrical apprenticeship. All his old mates are graduating.
Your boy will be right Noel, just ring him every day.

We went through schoolies last year with our daughter, what a very long week.
You probably won't get much sleep. She called every morning at 11am just to check in.
 It was a relief to pick her up but so much fun listening to all their stories(good/bad/funny).
 She said the red frog brigade were brilliant in their building, so helpful and friendly.
 On an upside you won't hear much from them when they get home as they sleep for 2 days. Lol

Schoolies week, what a crock of chit. Get out and get a job, they have plenty of time for holidays in their life to come.

My daughter wasn't interested in it last year and my son isn't interested this year.  My son said, I would rather go camping dad than go and spend my time with those idiots.

I don't get it. When did it start being the thing to do? We didn't do it, I don't know anyone who did it. We had a few parties, went to the beach, got jobs and waited til uni etc started. None of this going overseas or interstate

And yes that was 42 years ago..   Times have changed and schoolies is here whether you like it or not.
Personally I don't particularly like the schoolies idea but.... I'm stuck with it. It is our second (and last) time around.


I did not intend this to be an anti schoolies bashing thread so please don't take it there. I intended it to be a "thinking of you" place for all the other parents in the same situation. If you can't be positive, don't post.

Yes, you've done as much as you can as parents...and now at 18  you can only hope and pray that it sticks! 

Good job getting him through 12 years of schooling, you should celebrate as well!

We went through it two years ago, funnily enough, our 'country boys' were ready to come home after a few days, and we will be going through it again next year!

Good luck and I hope you get to hear lot's of stories on his return!

I don't get it. When did it start being the thing to do?

i finished year 12 in 1988 and it was all the rage back then for many students. i never bothered going myself, as the following week my parents had a unit booked at Coolangatta for 2 weeks, so i went and stayed there for free versus paying a fortune to party with friends from school.

Few years off for me yet, I went to bribie and fished for the week.  Wasn't interested, one of my staff does the red front hing every year, love talking to Jim about the stories, he said from when he started they would be distraught because they can't find so and so or there boyfriend kissed someone now it's because they can't find their phone.

I had a cracking schoolies in 92. Stayed at a mates place on the river in Cararra and had a 19ft ski boat with a 350 and a hq stationwagon to cruise around in...............f^ck we got into some trouble.

It was fun to see a pontoon boat full of other schoolies get washed as the 350 spools up with the prop at 45 degrees.

There were lots of toolies and a fair few glassings and other lovely attacks in my year but I think that a lot of that has / is being dealt with pretty swiftly these days.

My kids are 6 and 8 and I was thinking about schoolies the other day, they will both be 18 at their schoolies and that makes me shudder.

What scares me these days is that kids are starting to go to Bali rather than Surfers and in Bali nasty Shit can happen and your along way away from being able to help them over there.

I still cant believe with how cheap airfares are these days that kids want to spend schoolies on the goldcoast of all places.

Few years off for me yet, I went to bribie and fished for the week.

I did the exact same thing!
My Dad took some leave and he and I took his cheapie old caravan to Bribie and fished for bream and chopper in the Pumicestone Passage in a hired tinny and whiting and flatty off the beach.
My mates and I hired a unit at Coolum the week after for a quiet one away from the crowds.

My kids are 6, 4 and 2. When their times come, regardless of what they choose to do with schoolies, I just hope we've taught them enough/they've learned enough to make good choices.

My thoughts and prayers are with the schoolies and any MySwag schoolie parents!

Im sure he will be fine mate ...we all did silly things when we were younger (heck some of us are still doing silly things!) He seems like a pretty level headed kid, and so long as he knows right from wrong, he will have a blast , and be home safe next week. Let the kids party and let their hair down I say. My boy wants to go O/S when he finishes school. I said it was a great idea, as long as HE pays for it! lol

Yep, picked him up this morning safe & sound. No dramas from what we have heard yet and no damage to the place he was staying at, got the tick from the managers A-OK
All 3 schoolies slept in the car on the way home & as soon as he got home went straight to bed.
I think there was a bit of partying going on   


Huge relief for us oldies (who never partied when we were young of course).
