Swag Camper Trailer v Emu v MDC
« on: November 03, 2013, 08:27:06 PM »
Gents I am after some advice on who to go with for a new camper
I was very keen on the MDC V3 Deluxe, but after going to the camping show over the weekend in brisi, the Prices of the Australian made ones are much cheaper and nearly come up to the same price.

I was really keen on the Swag camper but have read a few bad reviews it was powercoated, the Emu is local to me (goldcoast) and is galvanised, both of them are about 1400kg plus GVM, which I want as I want to carry a small tinny some times on the roof, I am keen to get the standard 2 rooms plus the kids room that goes next to the drawbar.

I know prices will go back up a little after the show but the Swag camper was 8500 for a sandpiper with the swing over boat rack that doubles as a luggage rack, comes with mattress, extra kids room at the back, emu comes with all the same just not the boat racks and was $500 more but was galvanised.

Can anyone tell me what the go is with a lot of the makers saying they don't use Rip Stop Canvass, I assume its a Chinese's canvas but whats wrong with it ?

I will only take this thing on the freeway and caravan parks so a VERY easy life :)

Would I be able to tow a Swag Camper "Sandpiper" (that's the model I was after) on a Commodore 2012 Sportswagon ?

I have not owned a camper trailer before, I have done a lot of reading on them, I have owned an old caravan so any and all advice welcome

Rip stop canvas is generally seen on imported camper trailers,

From car sales the sports wagon appears to have a tow capacity of 1600kg so the trailers with 1400 plus gvm should be fine as long as you don't overload them,

How many in your family, is the kids room definitely required?
Best of luck with your search,
Ross

Cheers Guys,
the Lifestyle looks way above my price range I am looking around 9k max
I have 2 kids 4 year old and 7 year old so thats why we want the kids room just so we have a bit of room for all out suff and can have the front room with or without walls depending on what we want and still have a second room for the kiddies.

marko you can get a properly made Australian 1 Tonne camper trailer and imported tent for $7k or a larger tent for well $8k if you do some research. it sounds like at the show in your price range they were full imported tents and trailer brands. Good that you are inspecting in person and not just buying over the internet, that is very wise. Its too much money just to get a coupkle of years use out of it.

happy camping whatever you decide, burning some energy off the little ones in the outdoors.

I saw the Leisure matters new tents at the Dubbo camping show a few weeks ago. They have ditched their rip stop tents, and are getting their new tents made with (what seems to be) a pretty good quality (non rip stop) canvas. Pretty easy tent to set up too by the looks of it.
PM Big Nath, he was there selling them.
Cheers,
Mick

Pretty sure none of those campers are (fully) Australian made.

Give them all a miss and buy a real Australian made camper second hand.

I think the canvas was Chinese not sure if they were made here or oversea's though, trailers were made here.
I might go walk in have a look at EMU since they are so close, just wondered if people owned any of the above brands and had good or bad exp.

Horses for causes. Normally is a situation like this I would ark up blah blah imported is great blah blah, however I don't need to. No amount of yelling will get results. I simply need to do the best job I can, and stand out above the other cheap campers with respect and integrity.

Buy what suites your needs. However I have some great campers at the right price :-)
