tandem off-road trailer .. your thoughts ?
« on: October 12, 2013, 10:00:13 PM »
I'm looking a setting a tandem 8x5 trademans trailer up .
Putting a 4 person roof-top tent , big pull out awning , just going back to basic's I suppose .

Looking at why people dont use a tandem for bush work .

Your thought's , has anyone done anything like it ?

Cheers Jim

Hey Rockman
When we were in Longreach, there was a tradesman trailer with a 4 person rooftop tent. They were from the Blue Mountains.  He had a really great setup. One side was the kitchen and the other side all the bits and pieces, tools etc. I was quite impressed with it. And the awning was a batwing,he opened it out and it looked really good. Hope this helps.

Thats pretty well what I'm looking at doing

You can end up with a kitchen similiar to the ' adventure trailers '
Drop the fridge down into the trailer on 1 side , a big slide out drawer inside the trailer on the other side , water tank under the front , open up the other side ( under the annex ) with access to the internals of the trailer without going outside .
Just looking at going back to basic's with good ground clearance and good stabilty

I always thought a tandem would be better off road. Especially in the outback.. 8x5 would make an ideal size for a camper, love to see what you end up doing with yours.

Sounds like a good setup.
The only place I have been that you can't take a dual axle trailer is the bungle bungles in WA. Not sure about anywhere else.
There are loads of dual axle caravans out there so why not a camper trailer?

Towed a 10x6 tandem trailer with a Pathfinder from Orange to Lawn Hill, across the Savannah Way to Lorella  Springs and on to Darwin. Came back via Litchfield and a back road which included several river crossings, then down to Alice, across the Plenty Highway and back to Orange. The trailer was fantastic for dust sealing all of our goodies and with a side box for a kitchen, another for pantry, another for clothes, it was very easy to work out of and set up each day.
The dual axle was a blessing when a wheel bearing was destroyed and the axle gouged near Longreach on the way across to Rockhampton (can't believe there is no good trailer parts in Longreach).
Previously had a soft floor cheapy (which we broke on the back road from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs) and a hard floor AORC. The AORC was the fastest set up but to carry all of our crap and ease of accessing everything I have found the tandem trailer the best option for us (with a jettent).
Have to sell it because the tray on the my GU twin cab (new tug) hangs over the tow hitch too far and hits the stone guard. Could cut the draw bar etc off and redo but will probably get something made with a slightly longer drawbar. Cheers

It is on fleebay at the moment item # #181233692645 to give you itea of what the set up looks like.

Forgot to mention with the rocker suspension that things didn't seem to get as chaffed as much, particularly in the pantry.

Where do you plan to take it?
How wide is it?
What suspension type?
Is the construction suitable?
