Ban all the asbestos drivers!

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/national/diesel-emissions-spark-health-fears/story-fni6ulvf-1226733808729
As a petrol head smoker I hereby demand the Gummint at least make them all paint their cars drab green, plastered with health warnings and pictures of dying kittens and babies.
As for dropping off the kiddies at school, ban em I say!

I've come out and blown me stack with morally outraged too  >:(

I read the article and now wondering why.

So some lab coat has determined that the new clean diesels produce a carcinogenic which another lab coat says is that minute a particulate that it is unknown if it would be sufficient to cause an affect in humans.

In defence of diesel, unleaded emissions are ranked third on the IARC warning list as "possibly carcinogenic" or they just haven't had the same stringent lab coat testing as the use of unleaded hasn't increased like diesel has.

To finish the article all they can say is Australia is way behind Europe with Emission controls.

Really.  Now thinking allowed, if the Pollies only implemented more stringent emission controls instead of some money grabbing exercise like a trading scheme things might be different.

Or maybe I just need to get out and go camping in my old dirty diesel rattler.
Cheers

Al and/or Jan

Wonder why they forced trucks to become Euro V compliant in 2012 (I think it was) but waiting so long for cars? Maybe China hasn't learned how to scale down the burn off cats to fit cars. Or are they waiting for Ad-Blu pumps to be installed at all the servos to be less of an inconvenience?

What ever happens there is too much money in oil to develop a decent alternative so I suppose we will just have to go out camping as usual and hope the DMax or my old Rodeo diesel only kills me just before pack up time so I don't have to get into "that" fight about packing up  ;D

Well that's it then for the new asbestos now all the science is in-
http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and-reviews/car-news/the_great_diesel_fuel_efficiency_myth
clearly the Gummint has to ban diesel fuel forthwith and all those current James Hardie type denialists have to see the light and user pays convert their killing machines to petrol like all decent folk eh?

Now I've never owned a diesel but the lad has owned his diesel Hiace van for a couple of years so clearly he has to pay prorata for that into the new Gummint diesel Future Compo Fund for all the victims in future. Pretty easy to sheet home the costs as we have the rego records on file now. Naturally I have enjoyed the cheap private cost of diesel transport over the years vis a vis it's true underlying social cost by all accounts, but winners are grinners eh diesel fans?  ;D

OTOH perhaps you've come round to my consistent way of thinking that epidemiological risk is quite different to straightforward engineering risk? Ipso facto we as a society should never judge the past(or our ancestors) from the vantage point of modern access to computerised statistical data and concomitant standards of today with sanctimonious 20/20 hindsight. No sirreee we shouldn't, but rather until 'we' as a society decide to outlaw/ban a product or practice, then everyone is free to trade or consume without any retrospective repercussions whatsoever.

I don't know why anyone is surprised at this,
Just about every thing that comes out of a refinery is carcinogenic including lube oils.

Yeah we used to blow out the drum and disc brakes with compressed air and no doubt it was all over workshops everywhere. While evvery man and his dog joined the lynch mob for the modern James Hardie you need to bear in mind JH ceased all asbestos product manufacture in 1983. By the time the outraged mob were baying for blood there would hardly have been a shareholder or employee left from the asbestos days. No matter, a generation of consumers who had absconded with the cheap private cost of the products were all in the too hard basket, so the symbolic JH it was.

Now here's the sanctimonious hypocrisy of all those outraged pollies and union heavyweights frothing at the mouth and lining up for the photo ops with the Bernie Bantons. You see there was no real alternative to asbestos in brake linings so we, through our sanctimonious politicians, didn't stop the sale of asbestos linings until Jan 2003 and as that date approached every holder of stocks of linings was flogging them off at or below cost to clear their shelves. As a result many linings would be fitted by DIYers and the backyard mechanics for a year or two to come and all that time since JH saw the light in 1983, the ums and dads were depositing asbestos dust every time they dropped their preciousses at kindy or school. Get the picture? Our cars were more important than our kiddies futures.
