Looking for feedback/advice on what any Vic swag'rs did when they brought their new CT back from QLD or NSW to Vic.

We pick our new CT up in Bris week after next and are planning on a trip home with several stops on the Nth and Mid Nth Coast NSW before arriving back home 10 days later. Unfortunately the size and weight of the trailer is over the 'no inspection required' limit, and will have to be taken to Vic Roads when we get home.

I'm going to be a bit time poor when picking the CT up and am now considering just getting a 28day unregistered vehicle permit. I know it may be an expensive way to do this, but also have to consider the time to go to QLD Roads and then Vic Roads when we get home.
I also have to consider the time needed for insurance to sort out their bit (and waiting on a phone)

The one option I have considered to date is to take the 6mnth QLD rego option using a friends address, but I will in fact only be in QLD for 48hrs max after picking it up.

Any ideas?

I am in the same process. You just need a 28 day unregistered vehicle permit from Vic Roads, $20ish. They email you a certificate you use to prove rego. You are only supposed to use the permit for driving to get rego'd but in effect you are. On your way home drop into Seymour VicRoads and get it registered. Insurance you just need VIN with CIL.

When we bought ours from NSW, complete campsite had organised a permit for us to travel home to Melbourne.
We then just booked in to Vicroads in Seymour and 15 minutes and $63 later rego was sorted.
For the insurance, we arranged that over the phone with CIL all you need is the VIN as D4D said above.
Other option is just get it registered in QLD and worry about it next year.

Thnx guys, think you've confirmed my current throughts of just get the 28day permit from Vic Roads and arrange the insurance based on the Vin Number.

Of course my story if asked is that I'm getting old now and can't drive home in one go.  I can only drive a couple of hours a day and then need to sit and rest for a few days in a seaside campspot, to catch fish, sit in the sun, drink beer (and the odd bottle of wine) and recooperate from my tiresome drive. I figured at least 3 maybe 4 stops like this and I should have the energy to visit a VicRoads (and yes Seymour is pretty good these days, as there's less of a crowd).

Yep, Vicroads benalla or Seymour  is the go, parking is ok there. Is also one at wangaratta  but it's not very trailer friendly as it's next to Big W.

If you go to normal suburban Vicroads you have to book ahead for a rego inspection on new trailers.

What I did back in 2010 was register the Lifestyle as a Queensland Trailer and then when I got back to Melbourne registered it as a Vic Trailer and cancelled the Queensland Reg, got most of it back.

I was able to use my dads address in QLD (think I needed a QLD address) to register the trailer.

Did it this way so I could have a holiday on the way back and take my time.

Worked a treat.

thnx JCAT, that's the option I was initially advised to do. It's just the thought of having to deal with 2 Gov Roads offices that's swayed me to the permit option.

Surely Dave from Trackabout can get it registered before you even pick it up ? most manufacturers offer rego as part of the package ?

I would suggest you verify that each state will reccognise the others permits first.

Vic roads will let you use an interstate permit to get from border to your home as long as that is the destination stated on the permit. You do not need a permit to go from home to Vic roads for registration ispection purposes.

When I picked my camper up from LM first time round, I got a NSW permit on Sat morning, hooked up and drove home to Wangaratta, having arranged insurance before departure.

Second time around LM loaned me trade plates to get home and I posted them back next day. :)

Manufacturers can't do out of state rego. The differences between states are incredible, for once Vic leads the way.

I drove back from Brissy with a permit I think that was arranged with AS and drove home. Made a booking with VicRoads and the girl at Bundoora checked the plate/paperwork and that was it. Didnt even inspect as it was new.

On the basis that someone else may find this thread useful, here's an update.

I rang Vicroads this morning and they advised that the Unregistered Vehicle Permit (UVP) needed to be raised in QLD as the journey was starting there. You have to nominate start and finish address.  Because of the size and mass of the trailer, they need to sight the trailer for rego and issue of plates.

So I look on the QLD Roads website, and a QLD UVP has a maximum of 7 days and costs $28pd.  I queried with the Vicroads person why it had to be a QLD permit given that I would only be in QLD for 48hrs at best and their response was 'Qld permit required as that's where the journey started'.
The QLD UVP's not going to work as it is a maximum of 7 days and I'll be min 10 days before I get back to Vic.

I rang my insurance company and their only concern was that they had the VIN number and I could update the rego number when I obtained it back in Vic. So my insurance is done, but limited for onroad travel only when I have a UVP.

So now I possibly have 3 options.

1 - Go back to the idea of a 6month full QLD rego using a friends address, but my Vic Licence. This could then be cancelled and swapped over when I get back to Vic.

or

2 - Pay for a 3 day QLD UVP to drive straight back to Vic,

or

3 - take option 2, but then actually break down at Evans Head and have to camp there for a few days and then sort out either a NSW UVP, or go back to Vicroads and apply for a Vicroads UVP.

Part of my challenge here is that I'm planning a slow staggered trip back home.

Thnx, I did consider this as I could use my box or boat trailer plates, but if I had an accident, the insurance would be in question unfortunately.......

Be carful if registerng new in one state then switching it over within 12 months

If you try to do this coming over to WA they will sting you with the stamp duty again if you cannot prove that you owned the item in question for more than 12 months.

So if you do rego in QLD (talk the to dealer they may do rego for you and use their factory as the adress)

Bought my camper in Brissy two weeks ago went into reg dept and listed my temp address in Brissy
(Mates place he had to fill in a form to verify that I stayed there) and rego was transferred into my name with his address will not be back to Tassie until the end of October when rego runs out will re register in Tassie
