WA camping-Requiring Portable toilets

We are looking at travelling the WA coast next month. Broome to Perth. I recall watching on TV that some Stations/campgrounds require you to have a portaloo. You can either bring your own or hire one and some required to be paticular brand?

Any help appreciated.

I know that's a requirement at Ningaloo Station....not sure about anywhere else...

Ningaloo stn had the option to hire if you didn't own one. I think the stn managers prefer you use an Eco friendly solution in them and adhere to their instructions on disposal.  I could only assume the brand spec or similar was to ensure people had the ones that store the waste in the base rather than a crude long drop that attracts flies and is unpleasant for fellow campers.

Mate warrora station ask you to have one and at least supply a dump point to empty it. Friends stayed at ningaloo last month and had to show that they had one with them, but when asking where to empty it were told "just dig a hole and bury it". Go figure.

Warroora station has the requirement for a portaloo. You can hire one from them and they have a dump station.

Sign of things to come and in many places all ready here... My personal thoughts are that it should be compulsory for camping to carry a porta loo.  By all means if there's a public or drop toilet great , but we should all carry one, otherwise it's just another form of littering even if buried , we are the first to complain when free campsites get closed down so it seems to me that its only the right thing to do is to responsibly manage your poo ( sh#it that even rhymes ).   :-)    cheers

Best thing we ever bought for camping.  We got ours to enable us to go into Ningaloo last month but have used it everywhere, even in caravan parks for those night time needs, especially when it is raining. It's great with small kids who can't always hold on. 

One thing I have noticed traveling around WA for the past few months is the disgusting state of the road side stops with crap and toilet paper strewn everywhere   .  At least people could try and bury their waste rather than leave it lying around.

We dont carry one normally but I do agree with the comments about how dirty a lot of places are. There are lots or irresponsible people out there.

My main issue do the various places have different brand sthey require? As I will hire one rather than buy.

I would just buy a good brand name one, they're cheap as chips now, highly unlikely any place is going to demand a specfic maker, and then you've got it forever.

Just a thought if you rented one, you don't know whose done what on/in it previously    goodness it could even have been used by Jeeperscreepers

We needed to prove we had a portable toilet before we were allowed to camp at the Blowholes for the week ... pretty fair I think and it came in handy for the little ones. They do have a couple of toilets there but they close at 6pm and open at 8am ... Great if you can wait ;-)

Personally I hate them myself  but that's mainly because its my job to put the popup shower tent up and then empty/clean the toilet ... the tent takes me another 20 minutes and cleaning/emptying is just plain messy. Not fun.

Think we paid $120 for it ... Kookaburra brand. Works fine.

Yep same for us at Ningaloo. We just dug a hole instead of dirtying the porta loo after they advised us to dig a hole to dump it. We had purchased a loo for ningaloo/wa coast after looking up the camps book, but didn't have to show it at the time at Ningaloo and haven't used it yet. We managed to do all WA without using it but some places do ask for you to have one.

It makes sense to me, instead of people not burying there faeces and toilet paper everytime they go, if you have a portable loo its collecting it all, then once you finish dig a big hole and get rid of it responsibly, I reckon it should be a requirement for National and State Parks because even the camp sites further in are disgraceful with human faces and poo tickets Blowing about. ?

Only place we have had to use ours was at Quobba Point, and the guy asks to see it.

We have just spent over 5 months in WA in our camper and carried a portaloo and a Jimmy’s. Never had to use the portaloo once.  It was too windy at Warroora station when we were there, so we moved on.  Red Bluff had very good toilets. 
The comments saying they should be carried by everyone.  I could tell you some stories about irresponsible people with portaloos.  Example, people who use the dump points and push the cassette up into the fresh water tap to clean it out. The next unsuspecting camper then uses that tap for drinking water.  Yep, it happens.  Then there are the ones who tip the contents down the drop loos and destroys that system. Then recently a person was seen tipping his over a jetty in Darwin.  So I think the argument should be about the users, not what you carry. 
We will not be taking our portaloo on our next trip. But if you have the room and feel the need, then take one.   Kevin

We have just done the WA coast without a porta-loo and I survived even being pregnant

The National Parks have very clean long drops and some even have flushing loos. Compared to other states National Parks, the long drops hardly smelt! Most also have park hosts that clean the facilities every day and some get regularly pumped out.

We didn't do Ningaloo Station or Quobba because of the requirement to have a porta-loo.

We made sure that we stopped at the roadside stops that had facilities, and I was really surprised at how clean they were. If we stopped somewhere without facilities we just used a rubbish bag to collect the toilet paper and buried our waste deep.

Only issue we had was irresponsible campers dumping the porta-loo contents into eco long drops and making them stink
