Folding Fire Pits - Sunshine Coast
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:22:32 PM »
hi Everyone,
i'm on the hunt for a folding fire pit (prefer as flat as possible).. Will be able to pickup/source from Sunshine Coast. (Caloundra to Noosa and surrounds).
Really need this weekend, hopefully one of the my swaggers up around that area knows where i could pick one up...

Cheers

Hi cgs, either of those are perfect unfortunately not on the Sunshine Coast. They are brisbane or just south of it
I'm keen to grab one tomorrow or Sunday.

Give Jarrod at Camping Country a call, if he doesn't have what you're after he'll probably have some ideas about where you can get it.

l don't suppose you would consider a PDFP , The Pre Dug Fire Pit is an invention of mine & very handy to have . This is how it works , you send me lots of slabs of VB & l will send you a PDFP of what ever size you need . All you have to do is insert it in the ground when you get to camp & its ready to go . A word of caution , A PDFP has to be carefully stored in the CT as if it falls off on the road it will look like a pot hole & be hard to find .  >:D

There is also a bbq and fire place on Sugar Road that may sell that type of thing.

That looks the ducks guts Mandrake.
Few questions for you

1. Does the circle cut out of the top plate serve a specific purpose?
2. What size plate will you use?
3. How are cutting it out?

Cheers Marschy

Seeing as how I am an "expert" with a hand held grinder - Thats how ... ;D ;D

Size ... 3mm steel plate - I'll ask the metal shop guys they'll know if that's too thin or not ..

The hotplate might have to be stainless but would be harder to work with ??

The ash catcher would be 1 mm steel and big enough so all the bits lay flat in it for storage ..

That hole - is for the billy -- Not real sure why I did that   ;D ;D ;D

xcavator has made one - I just grabbed his idea and reworked it a bit .. There's a thread here someplace

on his build ...

Cheers

Hey Steve,

Why all the notching across the top? A lot of work there.

I'd use 5mm mild steel for the hot plate. Thinner will buckle from the heat.
SS is useless for hot plates. Terrible heat retention/distribution, and everything sticks.....I've binned my SS hot plate.....

So 5mm Mild steel plate on the main bits and 1mm sheet for the tray..

I did the notches as a bit of a strength lock together thing - If the slots on the sides

and angle plates are cut properly then the notches may not be needed ...

BUT the instruction manual  says my multi tool will cut mild steel plate ?? I wonder ??? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cheers

I've always like cast iron for hot plate BUT it's hard to find and difficult to work

Hi JD,

Bunnings have them. If you go into Bunnings they have 2 different types of rectangular firepits. One of them I looked at was brilliant for around $60 but unfortunately it doesn't fold down flat. When I told them I'd seen a camper with a flat folding fire pit purchased from Bunnings, they then showed me another one in their bbq section which did fold down flat and was about 2 and a half feet long by about 1 foot or so wide. It would need a bag to carry it around in. It's on my purchase list once I save a few dollars but it was around the $50 price tag.

Cheers.

Mandrake,

5mm for the hotplate, and everything else as per your original design, otherwise it will be heavy.

Not sure if you are still looking, but I got this one for fathers day.

http://drifta.com.au/SnowPeak.php?PHPSESSID=40c1aa275848cabcd186ec4b23310b02

They are made from Marine aluminium and weigh practically nothing, folding away to store easily and incredibly well made.

They are made in Japan, but Drifta now resell them. Granted they are not cheap, but buy once, cry once is my motto.

Typical Drifta quality!
