Kaymar single wheel carrier for 100 series IFS- reviews
« on: August 29, 2013, 08:21:40 PM »
Hi gang,

I am seriously looking at one of these single carriers

http://www.kaymar.com.au/vehicles/toyota/toyota_IFS%20Turbo%20Diesel%20and%20VX.php

I am dubious as to the strength regarding hard corrugation work , but I am sure my concerns are not warranted ..has anyone had one/used one and if so how did you find it.

I can add or remove it easily the literature says, any thoughts on this.

How much chopping into the bumper ?

Thanks in advance

Jet ;D

My brother has the full KMAR rear bar and twin carriers. I have had a good look over it and the quality is top notch.  Very solid over corro.  I know you are after the bolt on version but would guess that if it is KMAR, the quality would be the same.

Have no doubt, that wheel carrier will do the job. There are plenty on eBay, I have a saved search and would see a couple a week come up.

Why do you want one? If it is just to relocate the spare I would advise against it. If you want to carry a 2nd spare this would be a relativity cheap method.

I have a full Kaymar rear bar with a LHS wheel carrier. The bar is great, strong and attractive, though heavy. I had the bar on for a year before I added the wheel carrier. I reckon it looks terrific and I've added a light pole which I value, but I will tell you it is an absolute PITA to have to open the wheel carrier every time I want access the rear of the Cruiser.

can't help with how reliable it is on corrugations, but it's Kaymar so should be fine, as their steel rear bars are strong units.
i did have one of those single carriers but never used it as it was designed for, i chopped mine up to make a second carrier on my steel rear bar. i did at the same time end up with the original plastic bumper from the vehicle it came off of, there was no chopping of the bumper as such, just about half a dozen holes roughly 12 - 14mm in diameter drilled through it from memory.

I purchased my Cruiser with the left hand side spare wheel carrier already fitted it has a 180l Long ranger Tank in its spot
I installed one on the right hand side which will never fit another spare I wanted it to mount an outboard motor
But if I had to start from scratch I would mount the spare on the right hand or drivers side as when you have a trailer hooked up and need to take the fridge out of the back you have to lift it over or around the spare
You also have to open it up when ever you want to lift the tailgate up no biggy just worth noting

Cheers Michael

i just remembered i had a pic of that old plastic bumper bar, you can see the holes easily in it...4 for the latch and 2 others for extra mounting of the wheel carrier.
you'll also notice something i forgot about....i think your supposed to add some lights and a number plate holder as the carrier blocks some of the existing stuff, so you'll see extra lights and the number plate holder also. i'm not 100% on the details of the extra lights and licence plate holder, so best you look into that some more to be sure of the details.

Thats the one mate, Just for a 2nd spare for vehicle based touring so i don't loose the whole roof rack, then remove when at home, When you see one for an IFS let me know  ;D ;D 3 i found are all Live axle.

and one doesn't know or isn't telling me  >:D

Just can't justify 2K for 1 spare wheel once a year sort of thing . But I want to carry 2 full spares as buying tyres out field is never a cheap option. and have had 2 flats on a trip before so I know the value of 1 spare per axle. ;D

I had a Kaymar on my previous car and it was good.
Only thing was that the paint wasn't up to the task and started to flake.

Funny how a few weeks can change your mind I am now thinking 2K to solve most of my storage issues is cheap .. ;D ;D

Pretty sure that I'll change my mind again when I try and part with the cash LOL ;D ;D ;D

The chassis width is different between the live axle and the IFS.  When replacing the rear bar the mounts are slightly different.

Jetcrew, ask Ironman4x4 if they have finished the OT&E of their rear bar and carrier design. It might be getting close to being released.

Ok. That is fair enough. But with one of the single carriers (not full bar replacement) that theo is looking at, how much difference is there?  I mean can he get one of these live axle ones that he has seen 2nd hand and mod it slightly to fit?

Olly,

I thought about that , but now I see full rear bar replacements with tyre and twin jerry holders at around $1750 mark it is looking like I may as well just bit the bullet and replace the whole lot.

In a normal touring situation the 2 jerrys will give me enough spare fuel and for next years simmo it means only 2 on roof rack.

Fair enough mate. I think the benefit of the full year bar is worth it anyway, not just for carrying spare wheels
