it looks more of a missunderstanding on my part..

4x4 earth

he meant that if the prado (for example) drove onto the bridge without seeing the truck and therefore couldnt giveway.

cos he didnt see any on coming traffic..

maybe they could get out of the 4wd, walk over the bridge, lodge the intention to cross the bridge paper work, send it off to the goverment and wait for the official approval before proceeding.

Carry on...

Sorry is this in Queensland? I ask as there a large amount of single lane roads where I pull off completely as soon as I see a vehicle. I prefer them on the bitumen than me trying to deal with the rocks . The paper work sounds like booking a camp site in the Queensland part of the Simpson Desert you need to pre book the exact site/s prior to entering the park :-[ (maybe I should have put this in the rant thread >:(). As was said giving way doesn't really matter on our trips

I just have add my 2 bobs worth

People who have never driven a rig like that simply do not , or cannot comprehend the forces involved. I would have to assume the truckie saw it coming and simply could not stop in time without causing an even bigger disaster.  I say that is one lucky pdoo.

Ofcourse I was not there so my comments should be viewed from a distance.  Just hope everyone is ok.  And I agree size does count.

Wonder what the truck driver had to say?  I bet it would have been an interesting conversation.

Good work Brumbypt... it's those little lessons in life, now, that make big difference later :)

Like, for instance, some city slicker in a Prado, on his first trek west of Parramatta, thinking he has right of way over a truck...

(Although that may not have happened)

I noticed on my drive to Dysart that a number of the single lane bridges had an indicated right of way, ie in one direction there is a give way sign, the other way nothing. Not sure if the same applies in the NT. It is possible the Prado driver had right of way, and the semi just barrelled through.

A good reason to keep a UHF on CH40 and listen to the traffic. A lot of them (semis) will give a brief "Southbound XXX bridge" as they approach to warn anyone coming northbound.

They also tell you where the "flash for cash" are hiding :)

Many years ago when the Development roads in QLD were all dirt beef roads , all the give ways were in one direction .. ie: north or south ( I cant remember which ) ..

Over time with bitumen , new bridges , shire changes ,, its come down too  who puts up the bloody signs ...

Cheers

At what point do you stare down a truck and think...I can do this ???

To give him credit, those Prados must be tougher than I thought. It's ripped part of the bumper and half the bull bar off the truck  ;D

I wonder if the Prado owner gave him the finger when they were at each end of the bridge?
I DON'T CARE HOW NICE THE HAND SOAP SMELLS.....

You should never walk out of the public toilets sniffing your fingers.

Most decent truck and bus drivers will call their approach to narrow bridges on channel 40, so you know they are coming if you have a UHF that is

Apart from the fact that is common courtesy to give way to bigger vehicles, it is also common sense.

Yep, was thinking the same thing.........

that right side of bullbar must be a nice new hood ornament for the prado now!!!
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

There is an old saying in the maritime fraternity, "Might is right"........ Maritime law states that power should always give way to sail..... But in real terms if the power is a supertanker and the sail is a 14 foot dinghy then the supertanker wins especially when the supertanker is in a channel and can't move more than a couple of hundred meters of its course..... I used to be a lifeboat helm in the Solent (like the marine equivalent of heathrow airport) and you would not believe the amount of yachts that would take on massive container ships and ferries that could splinter them like matchwood  ;D

Any pics from the front of the Prado?

I think more photos are required, just to make sure the general consensus from fello myswaggers is correct.............
