Mt Dare Facebook Page and Broken Suspension
« on: August 20, 2013, 11:43:29 AM »
Is anyone on Mt Dare's facebook page?

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.701691263181713.1073741828.190515687632609&type=1

Dave generally posts pics of a lot of the things he has to repair and or recover from out that way, which is quite interesting and worth looking at if your preparing for a trip in the area.

Today he posted some pics of a camper that tore a stub off its suspension which I just needed to post here because Im getting to a point on our blog that has a similiar thing happen to us in that area. It was quite a humbling experience especially when you build your own suspension LOL

Anyway being able to talk about this other $40k + camper that broke worse than ours has made me feel better  ;D ;D

IIRC a myswag member had the same thing happen to the same brand of camper about a year ago...

Edit - it was 2 years ago http://myswag.org/index.php?topic=15904

That must be heartbreaking for the owner but thankfully with minimal effort it should be easy to fix

However having the hub mounting plate located in that manner - with welds in shear etc - is simply poor design

Edit: oops: left out the word 'effort' :(

If you get time and when I get that far into our trip on our blog have a read at how we managed to overcome a couple of little issues of similar nature in that area.

I dont want to say too much until I put it into proper context on the blog but our world looked like falling apart all at once LOL

Heres a couple of teaser pics ;)

We did the "Centre Trip" just over 12 months ago and the roads into Mt Dare and out of the place was to say the least " if it gets any worse we are turning back type condition" if I had false teeth they would have been stomped on while I was driving it was that bad. The only issue luckily was a wheel bearing on the mates c/t but we had a tonne on the back of the tray ( Northstar fully laden ) and was waiting for the "puff" of another tyre, for the life of us we don't know how we were all spared, the jagged rocks were baseball sized. During the week prior we had already done 4 tyres between 5 vehicles on better roads than that bugger of a track, heard it was being progressively done up a week later after our visit.

We did the Binns track from Alice to Mt Dare a few weeks ago and then from Mt Dare to Dalhousie and across to Oodnadatta and yes the roads we unbelievable. I was talking to some gents at a cattle station in the area and they said the roads in that area are the worst they have ever been and some sections of the Binns have deteriorated at an amazing rate in the last year or two. And I guess we have no one to blame but ourselves :)
