Air Compressors

I want to do some beach driving,and would like some advise on what air compressor to buy.
I guess ARB is the most popular but is also the most expensive ,you pay for what you get.
What are the critical features I should be aware off. I think portable is best ?

Some of the cheaper ones will take longer to pump from flat, they also burn out quicker.

The cheaper ones run smaller motors meaning they have to work twice as hard to do the same job but in 4x the time it takes a good compressor to do the job.

Ive got a cheap brand that shall not be named worked for the first 4 wheels 5 and 6 on the camper had to run lower pressures for 50km as the motor got too hot and didnt want to work anymore, it was also a 2hour job pumping 4 tires.


Portable is good if you want to take it out of the truck all the time, mine was in a bag and had 12v cords long enough to get from front to rear.

I agree with Nick 74 especially if you have very large and wide 4x4 tyres.  Unfortunately, more $$ = better pump.

I also agree with Nick-4x4 I suggest getting a double piston compressor which normally claim 150 litres some of the poorer quality ones will still overheat If you are getting ARB air locker they have an excellent high flow compressor you can install to pump tyres with no complaints

I have the twin ARB compressor mounted in the side wing of the rear drawers, this drives the twin ARB air lockers and also inflates the tyres on vehicle and because its mounted in the rear with the std ARB 6m hose reaches the front of the vehicle and the camper trailer, pumps up the six tyres no problem

they are a great unit, i used to use one of these before i installed lockers in my fourby. couldn't kill it, even after pumping up a dozen tyres one after the other (2 X 4wd's and 2 X caravans coming off beach pressures)

I've had one of the one of the Dr Air Pro Flow AC495 for about 12 months now and so far all good.  It suits my use.

I have managed to fit it in the same position that I had my old single unit. Where the old one was mounted "east/west" in between the back seat and the back of the fridge underneath the cargo barrier, the twin unit fits "north/south" if that makes sense. I will try and get some better pics later, but here is a rough one of my old single



Performance wise, we went for a play yesterday and I am very happy. The mate I went with has the single unit, feeding a 6L air tank with the standard 100psi pressure switch. My setup has the twin, feeding a 4L air tank with the standard 150psi pressure switch. Both of us were down to 21PSI for playing and we both normally run 40PSI for highway use. Both running 33" muds. In the time it took me to bring all 4 of them up to highway pressure, he was half way through number 2.

I notice supercheap have. 150l ridge Ryder compressor on special. Is this one of the cheap ones that doesn't perform? I really like the ARB twin but geez for 6-10times a year it is a lot of money.

Ridge Ryder was a fail for me.

I currently have a Tigerz11 Thumper, and it is a cracking unit. 2 4by's + camper trailers (12 tyres) from 20lb to 40lb without a spell the other day coming off the beach at Bundaberg. Could not be happier. Cost me about $130 - $150 with free postage. My father in law has the you beaut ARB Compressor in the tackle box, and it is a great unit too. But for more than twice the price, it is no better than my Thumper. It is only about 18 months old, but still works as good today, as it did day 1.

If it was only half the price I'd been in. The best price in the twin in a tacklebox I have seen is $770.

Just pay the two days wages extra over a chongmong one...
