The Alpine Way Closed.
« on: July 27, 2013, 06:12:40 PM »
I remember someone sayin they were heading that way soon.

Quote
The Alpine Way is closed in both directions between Thredbo and Khancoban.

New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services had been working to clear the slips and reopen the road on Friday.

But the landslides have damaged safety features and left a mass of rocks on the road.

Early estimates suggest 9,000 cubic metres of material needs to be removed - about 1,000 truck loads.

Traffic travelling though the Khancoban area will be redirected to the Snowy Mountains Highway via Tumut, adding three and a half hours to the journey.

Its the greenies ect that make these problems take so much work to clear up.
In the past they would of just sent up a dozer / loader / excavator and pushed all the slip over the other side and pulled a bit more out of the way , run a dozer up behind the slip to change water run , and its fixed ..2 years down the track its all regrowth and nobody would know ..

But not now days ,, no its got to be loaded out and carted away to some other place. then they stuff around and try to stabilize whats left , consult with all the different agencys , put up / take down , move silt traps , fencing , signs , ect ect ..

cheers

Maybe thats why half the country is stuffed.  Push 9000 cubic metres of dirt and rock down the side of the mountain into alpine streams.   mmmmmmmm - what could possibly go wrong with that?

That's what nature already did with it Dazzler - man made objects just stopped it.   All the dozer would be doing is continuing nature's work.   A bit of mud in the streams for a very short time won't hurt.

Thank you deepop , thats right , land slips happen in nature all the time ,, same up here in the Rainforest trees fall down , rot down and new ones grow ,, but no when a tree falls on the road it has to be cut up and carted off to town ,not allowed to just push it into the forest with the backhoe ..

Its bloody greenies with NFI of the real world thats stuffing this country ...

cheers

There's plenty of spots along that route you could push twice that amount
over the edge and the silt wouldn't make it to the valley floor.

I sort-of agree with some over-wrought WHS we must deal with these days - but google 'Carinya' and 'Bimbadeen' to see what happens when things go wrong in this region :(

That road is normally closed in winter anyway, the only reason it's been open is because the snowfall has been very light this winter.

I'll stand corrected but historically this road was gated/closed June-Oct, but is now all-bitumen and maintained/cleared year-round

Yeah I think your right, don't recall it closing. There is snow markers near the top but I don't think all that much of it gets a lot.

The road over the top to Cabramurra is gated and closed every June.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Hi Sunshine, I'm going back many years... probably mid nineties. I'd simply forgotten that it was being progressively sealed... you'll be fine on the bikes. However I reckon on a bike I'd prefer to go Khancoban - Tooma Dam - Cabramurra, then hit the Snowy Mountains Highway. The Alpine Way is just too tight to really enjoy on a bike.

Last year when we went to perisher we only got snow on the last couple of kms before threadbo. However the snow would have been over a foot deep.
We did however pass 2 car accidents........... so its an interesting road with/without snow.
I can see how it would be fun on a bike, but honestly at 5am in a large 4wd it is a pain in the arse.

This was reported on the local radio when I was down there recently. I had thought the road would be closed in heavy snow seasons.  Seems tough to have the whole road closed, radio traffic lights would surely suffice once some debris is cleared.  NPWS are too busy checking cars for parks passes.
