Not that it's ever likely to happen, but:

I'm a member of another very large Forum that has recently migrated to overseas ownership (American Groupbuilder.com),

http://aussiehomebrewer.com/

Great forum, lots of information, the usual issues,  some of those who use an All Grain Mash look down at us that use beer kits in a can (imported CT syndrome). Some really interesting long term members who speak their mind (Bum and Ducatiboy in particular).

With 25000 plus members its a valuable asset. Members lists, potential advertising, other income sources! The other income sources is interesting, if you pay $30 per annum you become a Pro Member. Apart from a few other benefits, your $$ turns off the in built advertising.

Member backlash has been pretty intense. Some banned permanently. Even yours truly had a post deleted (but still no warning points!!), which wasn't so bad except my post count was barely into double figures.

So Brett buddy, please keep us one big happy homogenous Aussie Family. We really enjoy it here.

EDIT, oh yeah, it has a live chat room, any thoughts on that team.

EDIT, oh yeah, it has a live chat room, any thoughts on that team.

I tried to get one of those off the ground a couple of years ago, but the reality is the site doesn't have enough members to support it.  Most of the time you sit in there and you are by yourself.

Brett already accepts donations towards the running of the site.  I don't think he would charge for access or 'premium' features.

Agreed Symon, sometimes you log in, and the chat room is pretty quiet. Other nights, you mite get 10 to 15 members on, usually weekends. Mite be worth revisiting?

I guess we all know Brett's thoughts on screwing $$$ out of the online community (or not in his case). He is to be commended for his stance in this matter, getting the PayPal option up for server support was a great idea.

Sometimes we don't value what we have until it changes.

Ill have a look into the chat room side of things. We have the server side storage.
Keeping things Aussie, Brett was really specific about having an Aussie web host to ensure good speeds.

It's my first night on the road on the big trip so will have a look at some options for the chat room over the weekend.
Cheers

I'm a member of a boat forum as well. It has heaps less members, 700 compared to 12800. It had a chat room that was sitting in the back ground to be used by any one at any time but had a fixed night once a week as the designated chat night. It worked well for about a year but eventually fell out of use.

Another forum I moderate on has an IRC chat room that is very active, but the forum has well over 130,000 members.

When I tried it here I think the best I got was about 4 on at once.

I wouldn't rush Justin, enjoy your trip and have a think about it when you get back. What would be good IMO if possible is some form of chat room invitation or general notification section on the home page indicating  who/how many members are in the chat room. That could entice members (or visitors) into the room. If its just a chat room tab, I know I feel a bit uneasy about logging into a chat area not knowing if anyone or who  is there.

Cheers, al.

Dang. Little Creatures gone overseas, and now AHB. Good job I still have Coopers. I haven't called in to AHB for a while. Was only just thinking I need to drop in the other day.

M life is comin back to normality as of tonight. We're out of the house and sleeping outside another myswagers house :)

Going to do some updates etc on the forum this weekend.

If your are visiting the national meet, I'll be there with the family van and car :)

Yep, coopers seems to be ok. A few moderators have even pulled the pin on AHB. Everyone seems gun shy, not knowing if their post is being pulled by a local moderator or some one from the good old

Anyone got the link to the myswag merchandise, might be a good topic to paste it into, besides I could use a stubby cooler or two.

HI Swaggers
I do not have a Paypal account or Credit Card, but Napanangka and I would happily get a painting done, and get one of the Swaggers to take it to a meet, auction it, and put the money into the MySwag funds to help the site.  I am a 100% original Australian, I am an A B Original, (Australian Blackfella Original), and if this site did not stay Australian, I would be one of the first off the membership list.
Regards

Mate that's awesome.  I reckon the national meet would be the place to auction it.

Thats a great idea Tjupurula, Napanangka's original should do really well, on an auction. I would be more than happy to bid in that auction :D

Hi Wayne
Napanangka and I were going to ask, once we got the painting done, if we could send it to you.  For some strange reason we seem to be willing to trust a local policeman, goodness knows why.  PM me if you want, as we have lost your address, hang on, we never had it.  By the way, you never ley me know if you got the flag and tshirts.
