Stoves for drifta kitchens
« on: July 26, 2013, 01:12:51 PM »
Hi all

I have been through the forums trying to find some advice on a good gas stove that will fit my new drifta swing out kitchen with a hose long enough to leave gas bottle hooked on to the trailer, and from everything I could find people aren't having much luck. These older posts are dated over a year and a half ago so I just wanted to see if there had been any new updates or if anyone had found something new on the market.

There was a lot of talk recommending the primus gas stoves but from everything I read they had to have a short hose (1200 at best) but I loved the size of the actual stove. I know this is been a bit picky and I can just shove the gas bottle under the kitchen, but the less unpacking the better!!

I am pretty new to all of this as I only just got my aussie jays trailer 5 months ago but have about 6 small trips planned for the rest of the year and just trying to get everything organised before then.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated ;D

Thanks will do. Thought I had read that the colmans were too high but must have been looking at the wrong ones.

You might be able to get a gas fitter to make a longer braided hose for the Primus. I was thinking of doing before my Primus passed away.

I grabbed a "partner stove" from the U.S. All aluminium....is a cracker. Maybe work for you.

I was sick of the coated steel units looking 100 yrs old after 2-3.

If you go with the high output Primus that Luke sells, you are limited to the hose which comes with the stove.  I phoned Primus and confirmed that is the only recommended hose for that stove.  BTW we have this stove and find it great.  Quick to boil the kettle.  We just lift our gas bottle off before unpacking and it sits at the end of the DPOR.  Never been a hassle doing this.  But I did modify the gas bottle holder to a quick release.  See my mod thread.

I'm working with a gas fitter on just this problem. If you wait a month or 2 I will have a solution.

We used a Coleman 2 burner on our Drifta and it wasn't to high.

Could try Gameco in Sydney. They'd make a long hose for you. Or a local pirtek/hydraulink outlet and get a hose they stock for forklift hose repairs

We have a Drifta DPOR and we use the Coleman 3 gas burner. We had to tell Luke what gas burner we used before he made the kitchen, as he had to modify the kitchen to fit it. Even having done that, hubby had to adjust (bend) the gas hose connector, as well as remove the handle and feet. A lot of effort but I wouldn't compromise on the Coleman.

I also got one of these. It was the only low pressure stove I could find that would fit into the Drifta DPOR and allow me to connect the stove to the gas bottle without moving the bottle.

Thanks again for all of your input everyone.

Looks like I might head the way of the 2 burner coleman as I already have my kitchen, so too late to get Luke to change the stove space.

Partner stoves look great but can't find anywhere in Australia that sells them from the US.

Anaconda had a spinifex red stove that looked like it would fit but can't find any reviews on them to see if they are any good or not.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out. Since I am just starting out in the world of camping, I still have no idea on the good brands/products but this site is a great help.

We have a DPOR and we run a Coleman even temp stove. We made no adjustments to the stove, but we did drill a hole in the kitchen to put the connection through.

Good luck with your travels we use a gasmate 2 burner as we already had this before we got the kitchen we just pack it up including putting the hose away and when we set up just grab the gas bottle out and sit it under the kitchen doesn't take too long to thread the hose down and connect and then we know the hose is not getting jammed in anything on pack up either.  We do have a butane cooker as well which if we were just stopping to make a cuppa we would probably use that.

Cayla13 I thought the same as you. In hind sight I wish I had just gone with the lift the gas bottle out scenario. We have done some mods but still don't have a simple fix to the connection of the gas.

We have DPOS with return and have the 3 burner companion that Luke sells. Great stove. Had a gas fitter change jets and correctly labelled so it must be used with 70kPa reg. I think they refer to that as "medium pressure". Hose is fine with a clear weather set up as we have a quick connect coupler and short hose due to the stove still having the high pressure fitting on it's supply connection. That can't be changed. The reg is fixed to the camper.

Bad weather means we need the canvas put up between the camper and kitchen and the hose then causes the front bit of canvas to only go half way down due to the hose being short.

Tried heaps of places including BOC Gas, Pirtek, Masters and camping stores in cairns so I can get a fitting to make a longer hose. No luck. Gas fitter in town was out on calls so we couldn't get one from him. I hope to get the fitting in Darwin in a week or so when we get there.

For the little time it would have taken to lift gas bottle out and put it under the kitchen each stop, we should have stuck with that. Much easier in the long run. I say this with 6 weeks on the road completed and 20 to go
