Tuffest 4wd ever poll

What I am looking for is capabilities of the vehicle in standard condition (besides tyres etc) through all terrain. 
A tuff 4B that pretty much could be fully submerged and would generally go where ever it was pointed.

(There has been a models that I have not chosen in the comparison for obvious reasons)

I would rate the VW Synchro, Early T3/Bay window would go anywhere in stock form and practically unstoppable.



VW Synchro needs to be on the list.....

Land rover product can be ruled out on the basis of dodgy electrics & pitiful engines (possibly excluding later model defenders & the 3.5 v8). Jeeps rule themselves out. Any of the other vehicles are tough & capable in stock trim, but my pick (based on first hand experience) would be the GQ patrol. Haven't had any experience with the 80 series but that could be another possibility. What these 2 have over the others is coil spring live axle suspension. My father has a stock GQ as a 2nd 4wd and its been everywhere and is still going strong. No issues with reliability. Great low range gearing. Great suspension travel. No overheating problems. (Qualifier to above comments: have owned FJ45 troopy, series 3 land rover & jeep, father has had series 2&3 lr, MQ & GQ patrol & now has 76 series)

Happy to consider adding: Hafliger, GU and VW Synchro if more posts support these vehicles.

I did not add Landcruza 100 and Patrol GU as I really think that previous models to both are generally tougher but happy to change decision if there is more requests.

I was basically trying to keep the list smaller rather than larger and did not really want to add a vehicle to the list if it only gets one vote. :cheers:

Put the diffs/axles from a GQ under an early 1HDT 80 and you would have an stoppable vehicle.

I've spoken to a few spanner swingers Al that have often mentioned the weakest component of the drive train is their diffs.
My rear LSD is not the best, I inquired to have it rebuilt and was advised not to bother rebuilding it, but to install a locker.
Read a few articles along the same lines as well  :cheers:

The 4.2 diesel GQ.

Bulletproof running gear and chassis. The only thing that they lack is a snail on the side of the block to give just that little bit more in the go dept.

The oildrippers might have slightly better suspension travel but the weak axles and cramped cockpit (mainly Defenders - for anyone over 5 foot 10) are it's short comings.
The criusers main fail is the LSD (or lack there of) which is why it can't compete with the GQ.

Just lock them front and rear and no problems, they compete with the GQs no worries

Far from the best, but the daihatsu rocky was pretty tough for its size.

Of course not my choice, but it was a tough little rig.
So were the suzuki sierra's.
Again probably not what your looking for but still tough little trucks..........

My vote will have to go to GQ patrol

At the time, I reckon the GQ was a big step forward in driveability, handling, comfort and off road capability. It gets my vote on this basis.

For sheer off road capability at the time (and these were my first introduction to off road driving with Forestry commission  Victoria) I would say the Mark2a Landrover.. These things revolutionised the perception of 4 wheel driving in the late 60's and early 70's.  Rough as guts tho, especially the pie wagons we used to have to endure sitting in the back of!

Landrover defenders have always been the most capable 4wd off the showroom floor. Unfortunately they are let down in most other areas.

Jeep wrangler would be up the list but also let down in many other areas.

Landcruiser would be high up the list with comfort but a very weak front diff and near non existant LSD lets it down.

Gq patrol 4.2 reasonably bullet proof but uncomfortable seats smaller cabin area and lack of turbo lets it down not to mention rust issues.

Gu patrol 4.2 turbo series 1 and 2 (pre intercooler and electronic pump) would top the list. It is reasonably comfortable, has reasonable cabin space. Topped off with a near bullet proof drive line and plenty of grunt...

The poll results so far are pretty much what I expected.  I thought it would be down to the GQ, 40's and 80'S but I thought the 40 would poll higher than the 80.

IMO
I also thought the old wileys and the MQ would get a few more votes... but anyway.

Not sure why I put the 55's and the Disco in but this is not my poll it is for everyone and wanted to make it fair.


I agree the Daihatsu Rocky is a tuff truck but not compared to the above.  The Range Rover set the benchmark in power and suspension but like the Rocky cant really compare to others.

As discussed earlier happy to consider adding: Haflinger, GU and VW Synchro if more posts support these vehicles, also the Austin Champ and Pajero.

I like the GU but I reckon the GQ is tuffer.

I think the early Suzuki eg lj80 should be considered.I bet people just remembered them bouncing past everyone and everything,off road anyway.
