Teckoshna P3 - uninstall any traps?
« on: July 24, 2013, 06:10:37 AM »
Hi guys

It looks like I may have sold our mighty Adventra. I had a Teckoshna P3 brake controller fitted by an auto elec. I used it once when we had our TS and haven't used it since because the KK has overrides.

I want to uninstall the P3. The car will be traded in on Saturday and I won't be home until late Fridat evening so I will be pulling it out in the dark.

Any tips or tricks? Can I just trace the wires and cut them from the loom? Are there any triggers on the brake peddle or similar that form part of the loom. Will cutting the P3 from the loom cause issues with brake lights, ignition etc.

Thanks in advance.

Jas

Why not just take the head unit and bracket out. It should have a plug/socket setup on wiring loom at the back of the controller. That would leave just a small (usually thermal) circuit breaker and some wiring behind.
This all I have ever done in the past.

I installed my own some time ago. The only tricky thing was finding the cold side of the brake pedal switch. Just follow each wire and disconnect. Job done

It has a loom that clips into the back MT, I assumed that this is unique to the P3 and wasn't aware it could be purchase separately. I want to install the controller into the my LC.

Only ever purchased head units, the circuitry can easily be obtained (read cobbled together) and installed by a competent amateur or your preferred professional spark distribution expert.

I'll be doing the same this weekend, "unwiring" the old scooby doo's electrical bits. All the good cabling, plugs and fusing for the VSR will be coming out, but I will remove only the brake controller head unit from under the dash. The rest is just cheap wire and a $10 breaker.

Yes, you can buy replacement Tekonsha wiring harnesses.  Plenty on ebay.

I would suggest yours has been wired using a harness as they come with a harness in the box.  If so, trace it back to where it is joined and snip the four wires.  Fold each wire back on itself about 1cm and tape with insulation tape.  Leave the wires in the car under the dash.  Maybe cable tie them up.  Job done.

I did the same when I sold the Surf.
Cut the 4 wires, taped them and labelled  them for the next user if he/she ever wanted to install one again.
Now the same controller with its wiring loom is in my LX470.

Thanks guys, done and dusted. I left the harness in as the auto elec had taped it into the loom really well and right up to the back of the unit. So I will just buy a new loom for $30 when I want to install it. Alternatively I may sell it as the KK has hydraulics.

Regards
