Almost Signed for a DMax couple of questions
« on: July 20, 2013, 06:11:11 PM »
Hi guys went and drove a Dmax today the missus loves it so it llok like next week we will be signing .It is the top of the line model demo with bulbar canopy tub liner and a few other things included I just had a few questions

1 what gear do you tow in we had a look at the manual and it makes no mention so do you just leave it in drive
2 the auto gearbox confused me I pulled it acoss to sports thinking it would lock out the high gear but it then just seemed to operate as a manual box when I started shifting up and down.
Is there a way to pull it across and just lock out 5th
3 for sand work can all the traction aids be turned off when in 4 high or do you need to be in 4 low for the beach

Thanks for the answers my friendss

Hi Chester
I have never owned or driven a D-Max, but I have seen more than a couple out here in the desert, with tourists and the like.   They seem to handle the corrugated conditions and some really rocky areas quite well, and there are some fairly sharp bends and steep hills around here, with dirt roads, and they apparently handled it quite well.  Just some information for you, but I am no expert.
Regards

Haven't been on sand yet but sports mode will stay in the selected gear .it won't change up until the right speed is reached..all the automatic stuff stays on ..a good thing I reckon as it is as good as lockers..if not better !!
Gotta try the ascent and decent stuff one day soon...

Ours is older model than this 2010 and unfortunately cannot answer your questions as ours is manual but they are a great ute to drive enjoy if you go ahead with it

Mandrake in sports mode will it change down a gear automatically or is it purely a manual box as when I test drove I put it in 4th then when I stopped it went back to 1st but would not go back up through the gears to 4th when I took off again just seemed to stay in 1st ???

Yep once it goes to first you have to stick shift to go up..when it allows you...you can't do a 2nd gear start off like you can with manual..also in cruise control in 5th not D the kick down to 4th doesn't appear to happen in D it can be quite violent.

Apparently the size of the tyres and the position of the steering linkages.  I would be interested to know if someone has?

I tow in Drive then switch to 5..This holds 5th even uphill..Drive tends to kick back to 4 fairly violently when in cruise..
Drive on dirt seems to prefer 4..and you need to flick to manual and hit 5...

I just tow in D, when descending steep hills I use manual. You can turn off ESC when using 4 high, but make sure you push it in and hold it for a second or two.

Did you know the DMax has hill descent control.  Will hold in 3rd gear if brakes applied going down hill.  Tried it the other day and worked a treat.  Not sure how well it holds towing.
