ATM Skimmers
« on: July 18, 2013, 04:36:38 PM »
I've never seen one and theres a story bout them coming to light again in QLD

But for those that are unsure what they look like - keep an eye out.. if the white plastic was same colour, I don't know how you would spot one.

Always cover your pin code,.....ALWAYS.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Some advice from a mug banker:

- Steer clear of ATMs in secluded places. Bank branches are typically more secure.
- Try and use the same ATM every time. Familiarise yourself with it, and be wary of changes in its appearance, particularly with the card reader.
- Grab hold of the card reader and give it a good wrench. If it is kosher, you can't hurt it. If it is dodgy, chances are it will come off in your hand.
- As above, always cover the pin pad with your hand or wallet. Stand as close as possible to foil prying eyes..
- Check your balances regularly.

Cheers,

Rohan.

You need to check the entire ATM for "pin holes" in anything ... real ones won't have them ... they are itzy bitzy spy camera's recording your pin number.  They could be anywhere on the ATM - the card slot, above you, near the keypad.  This is evidence that the ATM has been compromised.  Call the  :police: then the bank who owns the ATM.

You can see the itzy bitzy camera on the above pic ... near the yellow change button but on the card slot.

Here I go again, I have read all the above posts, but I still cannot work out what an ATM Skimmer is, and whether or not we would have one out here in the desert.

TJ l know some of these posts don't make a lot of sense to you but , it is another way ripped off in town . There is always some Dirty Dog trying to take stuff that you have worked for & saved for . Sometimes  huge gangs that roam around fixing the machines to gather info about your accounts . Then empty your account & gone  . Information is King , they get yours bleed you dry  then move on . You just have to be so careful in everything you do today . Sad but true .

We must have them here then, as about 3 years ago my computer was hijacked (I think that is what the police called it), and we lost quite a bit of money to some overseas country.  Luckily enough the money got replaced as they were able to prove that we had not used it.

The skimmer is the white green device shown above where you insert your card.

The skimmer reads and records the details on the magnetic strip etc when
you insert your card.

The camera, little hole in side of skimmer videos you entering your pin.

The offenders then use the recorded information to make a new ATM
card with your details and use this to clean out your account.

I've made it a habit to check my balance every morning without fail ... as soon as I get out of bed I stand on one leg.
