Petrol prices, how much have you paid?
« on: July 06, 2013, 09:09:43 PM »
I remember the first time I paid more than a dollar a litre. It was in the West of Tassie in the 90's and I thought something had gone horribly wrong with the economy.

I was around Laura the other day filling up and wondering when I would have to pay more than $2.00 a litre. Wonder no more, just filled up at Ayers Rock Resort and paid $2.18 a litre. Don't worry, go the the IGA and get a fuel docket and save 3 cents a litre! Thinking that was resort prices I pressed onto Curtain Springs, $2.15 a litre - no IGA voucher needed ;)

Now I haven't done as much outback travel as you guys so I was wondering how bad does it get? And how long before we are paying $2.00 in metro areas...

I remember paying $1.45 at Hells Gate in 2001 for diesel. I thought it was so extreme that I took a photo of the bowser displaying the price, now I think, if only!
We used to pay about $2.45 on Thusday Island for unleaded in 2008

Petrol was $2.15 at Rabbit Flat Roadhouse back in 06, diesel was $2.05.

Can't wait for the drag racers to comment in this thread...

Well the thread says "how much have you paid".  Was only 13 cents per litre when servos first changed over to metric petrol pumps.

And I'm not that old by the way  >:(

I'd just finished topping up with 20L of unleaded at $46 to get me back to the bitumen at Coober Pedy ($1.69 I recall at Shell less discount from the local super docket) when an older bloke spots the old style tumbler total(no digital here) and goes WOW! Sure beats walking sez I and he nods reluctantly.
I can remember as a kid the old man cranking the handle on a glass bowl job on the Stuart Hwy bulldust and we had to sit down with the stockmen for lunch at Renner Springs for a feed. Stinking hot and it's Shepherds Pie and Sago Pudding for lunch and mum's doing the usual with the squawking brood of 4 in an FC Holden station wagon- Sit up, shut up and eat up you lot!

I rememeber when I was a P plater last century, and fuel was much cheaper per litre.

The petrol pump guy, back when people used to pump petrol for you, must have thought I was a bit green and tried to charge me the dollar price for how many litres I had bought. (that was back in a time when you used to get more litres than price paid)

If only I could get away with it now..........

Last week, our local fuel price went up 15c a litre overnight!!!!!

I find we are using our scooter more and more and more and more.........

It's simple and its called inflation. In all reality the average price of unleaded has increased no worse than any other necessity in life, the main reason we think about it is because we buy it every week and the price can fluctuate by up to 20% depending on the day of the week its purchased.

I'm not that old  ;), but I remember paying 16 cents for LPG in the mid 90's.  $13 to fill my V8 Falcon!  The BBQ costs twice that these days...

Remember the old coin pumps for after hours?

$2.00 worth of 20 cent pieces and you could do the drive-in that night, and grt to and from work for 3 days after.

Pink Roadhouse last September

Have paid similar a few other times at Yulara, Kulgera, Cameron Corner, Innaminka etc etc. This is what you pay for the privilege of having services available in the outback.

So you go into the servo and pay for the fuel at over $2.00 a litre then over to the fridge to get the 2 litre franklin water. Back over to the counter $5 thank you Sir.     Water more expensive than the fuel!

I paid $2.32 at Curtain Springs last year.  Started to lose the will to live at around 100 litres so called it quits.  It was very funny experience  though because the girl came out and unlocked the bowser (not surprised it was locked at that price), filled the Prado and then gave me a post it note with 100L / $232 written on it.  I then followed her back into the shop and gave her the piece of paper back and she proceeded to charge me for the fuel.

God I love how stuff works in the outback!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Cheers

Steph

August/September last year......diesel $3.20p/l at Punmu......

Costings are all to do with what the owners are having to pay the transport company...... try $5,000 for a fuel delivery - before you pay for the fuel they have just delivered!!!!   "Stores truck" Companies also know how to charge...so the people who we rely on for our fuel, bottled water, and other "luxury" items are having to cover some horrendous costs just to get the goods to where we want to buy them from..... then a few cents to try and make a living..... or to help them to keep the generator going so we can have a "powered site"!
It costs heaps to live in the outback not just to visit.....
