Rear bar (wheel carrier) GU Patrol

I am in the market for a rear bar (wheel carrier) or my 2005 GU Patrol. I've been looking and researching for some time.

Powerful 4x4 are a good price, but are they a tough product ?
kaymar are a tough product but on the expensive side.

I have been reading here about Raslarr Engineering and they appear good, and I have also been reading about Milweld Customs and they appear good.

Does anyone know of any engineering places in Sydney that do similar work to Raslarr & Milweld (which are in Vic) that are a tough product at a good price.

A friend got one for his Toyota cruiser from MCC 4x4 accessories. He is a stickler for quality and is pretty happy with it. Pricing is good and accessories are available as required.

where as I had one on my previous Troopy and it was one of the first mods I wanted again on my 100S.

I think old mate is onto something here, agreed they are heavy bits of kit, defo do serve a purpose though, I have been mulling over this for some time.

For me I need something to protect the rear quarters for when I am off seeing the country, but I only say this so as to have piece of mind if I get into a situation where they would pay for themselves, but I have asked myself so many times now, how often would that be ..

For that reason I have lately thought that a decent made and looking rear tube bar, which would prob be half the cost would suit my needs, protection wise, the prob is there isn't a hell of a lot on offer, plenty for GQ's but not a lot for GU's, I know I could go the custom option but then my thoughts are the cost would rise, and perhaps I would be better then to just purchase a wheel carrier.

I guess for me its hard to justify the expense for the item which may only be tested once or twice a year, and only then if the situation arises, where as a cheaper tube type bar would do the job and be cheaper to live with.

Why? Because he wants to! And because the landcruiser has its spare tyre under the chassis. If you want a long range tank you need to relocate it. If you need a reliable spare you should do the same as it's a bit exposed under there...nothing worse then needing a tyre only to find your spare has been dragged over a tree root or rock and no longer holds air.
Only downside is the tyre is a heavy bugger to lift up onto the carrier.

If you have a Patrol or any other vehicle with the spare up on the door then I think it is a different story. That said, I had a GU that had only a 2" lift, both rear quarter were easily damaged on relatively easy rock steps, only so many times you can tek screw them back together before it looks like a dogs breakfast.

I made my own rear bar so can't help you with any brand name only I know mr Mac gu on here was happy with his kaymar.

Ps. I wanted one for rear protection and to get the spare of the door. Weight of it has cracked door (gu). I am glad I have it. The amount of times I have dragged the back corners over rocks is crazy. Bit depends on what type of driving you do also.

Im another for the rear tube bar. Lighter, higher and strong enough to take repeated hits. My spare is the original old 32" so it hasn't loaded the rear door up like the bigger tyres do. For the very rare occasion it is used id have to swap wheels around and make sure the small one is on the front of the Patrol.

I know this doesnt help the cruiser owners who want to relocate the spare but Id still go with a tube bar and stub axle set up.

Its a poor photo but i had to lighten it heaps to see the rear bar.

You ask why? I ask Why not?
The OP has already identified that he wants one, he just wanted to know other brands.

1.  I always carry at least 2 spares when we go bush. That is minimum.
2.  Mounting big heavy wheels on rear doors wrecks the hinges
3.  Having an under-slung tyre reduces clearance for my cruza whilst 4x4ing
4.  Having an under-slung tyre is a real PITA to remove if you have a flat rear tyre.
5.  The winch on an under-slung tyre can become damaged or full of rocks and dirt.  This happened to me quite a few years ago             on a 47S Cruza and was a major PITA to get the spare down.
6.  The steel rear bar gigs both the Cruza and family much better protection than the OM plastic  version
7.   I don't like spares on roofracks.

I have had the swing away rear on my last 2 vehicles over the last 14 years.  In 4-5 years I will replace the 100S with most likely a 76S. One of the first mods will be a rear swing bar rear carrier.  I am sure as my wife and I get older in the future, (we are mid 40s at the moment) our 4x4 travels will be less remote, for less time and probably wont even need a 4B at all.
At the moment we travel remotely and need a decent 4x4 with clearance and capability and at least 2 spares.

What we do may differ to you Lost but I am a big fan of them. I am just expressing my opinion.

I have he opposite lock rear bar on the GU, i have a spare on one side and gerry can on the opposing. It adds a bit of weight to the car but all in all with the type of driving I do it has saved some major panel work. I fitted it up myself and saved a few dollars, I looked at all the others and found it to be strong and reasonably priced. The only dowside i find is that every time you want to get something out of the backyouhave to open both arms normally

I have a powerful 4x4 bar on my 105 series cruiser. I wound not buy one again. It is cheap for a reason.

I don't think they are worth saving a few dollars

I have replace the original lights which melted

Remade the mounts - only after it bent up and buckled my rear quarter panel

The bearing dust cap does not seal and is an odd bod size so can't get a better cap.

All the mounts are slotted due to the Shit fit.  I am about to modify the carriers as well as they sit too far out from the back door. Needs over 50mm taken off them.

Save your dollars and spend a little more.

Anybody who wants to check one out fitted I'm in Brisbane.
