Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so please be kind...

I'm in the market for my first ever camper..
I'm really interested in the hard floor campers, but open to comments from both sides of the fence.

I have 3 young boys, and we want to initially do some local camping (north east Vic) to settle into the camper then move on to a Tassie trip and in a few years when the boys are old enough I want to go up the centre to Darwin and back down the coast.

I want to spend around $10K...

What does everyone think will be the best options???

Firstly, welcome to the forum Cam.

A hard floor generally has less tent space than a soft floor so with 3 young boys you may be pushed to fit them all in. Maybe bunks would work for a while whilst they are still small. However if you are set on getting a hard floor, maybe look at a separate tent or tents for the boys or an additional kid's room. The separate tent/s would possible be the cheaper option and easier to set up and transport.

10k will buy you a top quality Aussie made soft floor camper.

Check the classifieds mate. I bet you may get some change from 10k too.

Hi Cam,

Another vote for a good quality second hand Australian made camper,and a shame less plug for our camper in the classifieds that could be yours for around that 10k

1st & 2ndly Welcome to the Zoo . Where are you located as there might be a catchup about to happen where you can have the tour of all the set ups . Seeing them in action & a chat to explain all the workings solves a lot of questions . Check out the trip reports pics that can be handy .

I would look at Aussie Jays for a good camper. Not affiliated but two people on this forum are happy with theirs. $10,500 for the off roader version

As others have suggested grab a second hand Aussie camper, at that sort of money you will get something more than suitable to get you out there.

Forget the hard floor vs soft floor question for a few moments and make a list of what you want in a camper.

Eg) How do you want the kids to sleep? Are you okay with putting them in bunks? Do you want them up off the floor? Are you okay with having them on Matt's every night and then moving the bedding into a pile during the day?

What sort of kitchen do you envision? Do you want one with built in storage or pantry? Are you happy to have all your kitchen stuff in seperate boxes and move it into the kitchen area once setup?

How much Jerry can and gas bottle storage do you think you will need?

Is it important that you can access your kitchen and gear without needing to setup the camper?

Will you carry your fridge/esky in the car or will you need to store it in the camper?

Are you carrying bikes or boats?

Do you need off road or on road?

If you make a list of must haves, wants and don't wants, it should make it clearer to see which type of camper will suit your needs better.

I have four kids with two being littlies.

IMO the most important thing is ease of setup and repack. With the little ones it somewhat dampens the experience when the pack up takes a long time and watching the kids while you do it;

You know the stuff = "Dont pat that snake" "Please put down the machete" "Dont lick the chainsaw" etc etc

I have chased my tail with this a bit with a number of different campers. The big things for us seem to be kitchen packup and putting away kids sleeping gear/bedding etc. We have now moved towards something similar tothis;

Our build is close to finished with only the internal fitout to complete and the roof top tent.

Whilst the one I linked to is in the US I reckon you should be able to get a similar setup around the 12k here in aus. Teardrop campers are on the rise at the moment with a lot more on the web for sale.

What I really like about the concept is you have a hard sided camper to sleep in with a coil spring mattress, the roof top tent with a mattress and the kitchen is always set up at the rear.

I really like the look of the teardrop, but without having looked too closely at it my impression was that it didn't have a water tank, awning etc etc compared to other campers. Granted it's rather affordable though!

With a 10k budget I would consider 2nd hand hard floors, but also consider soft floors depending what your ideas and requirements are. A lot of the better soft floor campers probably don't take much longer to set up compared to a hard floor. As others mentioned soft floors often have more room, may not be an issue for you if your kids use swags etc anyway.

If you can get to a camping or 4x4 show that would be one of the best things you can do, looking at these things in person gives you a bit more of an idea of what you do and don't like. You'll not likely find a perfect design but the more boxes you can tick the better.

Mine, a squaredrop, has 160 litres of water and a foxwing. I will get some shots tomorrow.

Firstly welcome to MySwag, a great site with plenty of information and a good bunch of people. There are a couple of cheaper CT's on this site, CortMelnKids are selling one over there on the east coast, and you could use the remainder of your budget getting your odds and ends. I was actually going to buy that, but a couple of small health issues changed those plans for me.

Thanks for all the info guys,

All 3 of my boys have swags and are really happy to sleep in them...
This gives me a few options when deciding on a camper to buy I guess..
I will have a look at a few models and maybe get to a show to get a better fell of whats out there..
Its all a bit daunting deciding but I reckon I will do my homework and end up with a cracker...
